HOOSIERS WIN HATTER CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP
DELAND, Fla. - Indiana's women basketball team defeated Alcorn State 78-54 Saturday evening in the Championship game of the Hatter Classic, hosted by Stetson University. Senior center Cindy Kerns was named MVP ofthe Classic while Kay Morgan and Jill Chapman were named to the all-tournament squad.
Indiana, 8-3, opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers by junior Kay Morgan to quickly put the Hoosiers up by 21 points at 45-24. From there, Indiana appeared able to score at will as the Hoosiers cruised to their sixth-straight victory.
As a team, Indiana shot 49 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range which included eight three-pointers. Individually, Jill Chapman led IU with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Cindy Kerns and Kay Morgan each added 13 points.
In addition, the Hoosiers committed a season-low 10 turnovers.
Indiana opened the game with a 3-point bucket by 6-5 center Jill Chapman and then traded scoring for almost 10 minutes in the first half before the Hoosiers were able to take control and close out the half with a 22-8 run, leading 39-24 at the break.
"I think that we played active on the defensive end tonight and pushed ourselves on the offense," said Coach Jim Izard. "I think we did a nice job of getting the ball inside where I felt we could hurt them (Alcorn State). I also feel that our up-tempo style of play hurt them."
