HOOSIERS HOST SAN FRANCISCO
GAME #13 FACTS: San Francisco (7-3) vs. Indiana (10-2). Sunday (Dec. 20). Assembly Hall (17,357), Bloomington, Ind. Game time is 1 p.m. ET.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers return to action this afternoon as they host San Francisco. Today's game is Indiana's first in eight days after having last week off from competition due to final exams. The Hoosiers come into today's game 10-2 after defeating Bowling Green 81-55 last Saturday in the championship game of the Indiana Classic.
TELEVISION: The San Francisco game will be broadcast by ESPN Regional Network. John Laskowski and Ted Kitchel call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 730 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 628-222 (.739). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 730-272 (.729). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 334-138 (.708). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 3-0 vs. San Francisco overall and 1-0 while at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and San Francisco are meeting for just the second time. The Hoosiers won the only previous game 65-52 last season in Oakland in a game that was part of the Pete Newell Challenge.
HOOSIERS VS. THE WCC: The Hoosiers are 6-1 against teams that are inthe West Coast Conference. The last time IU played a MAC team was last year's game vs. San Francisco. Indiana's 3 games against Santa Clara are the most for the Hoosiers against a WCC team.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are ranked 10th by ESPN/USA Today and Associated Press.
HOLIDAY CHEER: The Hoosiers have been a good team in December over the years. IU's record in the final month of the year since the 1990-91 season is 62-9 heading into today's game. That mark includes a 4-1 record this season and 9-0 in 1990-91 which is the best mark during this span.
LAST MEETING: (Indiana 65, San Francisco 52, Dec. 22, 1997, Oakland, Calif.): Indiana overcame an 8-point halftime deficit by holding USF to just 20 points in the second half to register a 13-point victory. USF shot just 27.3% in the second half after making 13-21 in the first half. The Hoosiers also reversed their own fortunes as they shot 37% in the first half and 62.5% in the second half. A.J. Guyton led IU with 17 points while William Gladness added 12 off the bench. The Hoosiers finished the game shooting 49% while USF shot just 44.2%. IU also forced USF into 25 turnovers while committing just 12.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 81, Bowling Green 55): A.J. Guyton scored 21 points, 10 in a second-half run, to lead Indiana to an 81-55 victory over Bowling Green in the championship game of the Indiana Classic. The win gave the Hoosiers a 50-0 record in their tournament. Len Matela came off the bench to lead Bowling Green with 15 points
and 10 rebounds. Anthony Stacey added 14 points for the Falcons, who never led in the game. Bowling Green whittled Indiana's lead down to 9 points with 15 minutes to play in the second half after capping a 7-2 run with a free throw by Anthony Stacey. But Indiana shut the Falcons down from there, going on a 23-2 run. A fastbreak behind-the-back pass from Luke Recker to Guyton led to a layup and a 65-35 lead. Recker added 13 points for Indiana, including two 3-pointers. Rob Turner and Larry Richardson also had key games for Indiana, scoring 9 and 8 points, respectively. They missed only two shots between them in 11 attempts. The Hoosiers shot 53 percent from the field while holding Bowling Green to 34 percent. Indiana led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but the Falcons fought back with a 10-3 run to trail 34-24 at halftime. The game was Bowling Green coach Dan Dakich's first return to his alma mater as a head coach. Dakich played for the Hoosiers from 1982 until 1985. He joined Knight's staff after graduating and became his top assistant in 1990. He remained in the position until leaving to coach Bowling Green in 1997.
10 WINS BEFORE LEAGUE PLAY: Indiana has 10 wins before league for the fifth time in the '90s. The other times this has happened was 10-0 in 1990, 12-0 in 1991, 11-2 in 1993 and 13-1 in 1997.
TURNER AND RICHARDSON PLAY WELL IN CLASSIC. . .: Rob Turner and Larry Richardson were on display in the Indiana Classic and both players responded to the challenge. Turner started both games and averaged 9 points per game and 4 rebounds a contest. He scored a season-high 9 points in each game. His 6 rebounds vs. Boise State was a team-high and tied a career best. He also had 5 assists and 2 steals in the two games while shooting 8-14 from the field. Richardson scored 8 points in each game (7-9 FGs) and averaged 5.5 rebounds a contest. He registered 5 blocks in the two games which included a career-high 3 vs. Boise State.
. . .SO DOES GUYTON: A.J. Guyton broke out of his shooting slump in the Indiana Classic. He made 17-26 field goals and 4-8 3-pointers as he averaged 23.5 points per game. The junior was named the tournament's MVP. He was also 9-10 from the line and had 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists in the tournament.
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season with great success. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
GUYTON CLOSES IN ON 3-POINT RECORDS: A.J. Guyton has 158 career 3 pointers and needs 9 more 3-pointers to move into second place on the school's all-time 3-point field goal list (Damon Bailey is second with 166). His 382 3-point attempts is now second on the all-time list surpassing Damon Bailey's 380. Brian Evans tops both lists at 186-456.
TOUGH SCHEDULE PAYS OFF WITH HIGH RANKING: Indiana is ranked No. 2 in the first RPI Index of the season with a .701 ranking. Some of that lofty ranking might be in part to IU's tough schedule. The Hoosiers finished a portion of their schedule where they played four games against nationally-ranked opponents in five contests. Those games were against No. 18 Utah, No. 19 Syracuse, No. 10 Temple and No. 5 Kentucky. The Hoosiers went 2-2 in those games.
OFFENSIVE SHOW: The Hoosiers averaged 85.5 points per game in the two games last week. That was the first time this season IU has scored at least 80 points in consecutive games. Indiana shot 53.2% in the two games and attempted 65 free throws.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 10 wins and 2 losses this season. IU has shot 47.1% in the wins but just 38.7% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 39.6% in the victories and just 28.2% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin in the wins is +0.6 but in the losses it drops to -10.5. The Hoosiers also average 23.1 free throw attempts in the wins and just 12 in the losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have been shooting better as of late as they made 58-109 field goals (53.2%) in the Indiana Classic. The consecutive above 50% games marked the first time this season that had happened. The 53.8% game vs. Boise State was the second best mark of the season. Indiana has now shot 50% or better four times. Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1% but comes into today's game shooting 45.6%. IU has outshot its opponents in each victory.
LONG RANGERS: IU broke out of a 18-58 3-point slump by connecting on 5 11 vs. Bowling Green. That was the fourth time this season the team has been above 40% from long range. IU has been under 36% from long range only three times this season. Indiana's 27 3-point attempts against Temple is a school record. The previous record was 25 vs. Iowa last year. The Hoosiers also tied a season-high with 9 3-pointers vs. the Owls.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana was 46-65 (70.7%) from the line in the Indiana Classic after going just 12-18 in the two games prior to the tournament. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 177 but the opponents have attempted 202. In the last two games, IU made 46 while the opponents attempted just 33.
BOARD REPORT: The Hoosiers have won the battle of the boards in two of the last four games and have a +1.5 margin during this span. IU has had 11.5 offensive rebounds in each of the last four games. Indiana comes into today's game with a rebounding margin for the season of -1.3.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers were looking to pass in the Indiana Classic as they averaged 17.5 assists per game. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 61.5% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 9 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only three games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 8-2 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers. IU has averaged only 11.5 miscues per game in the last four contests which includes a season-low 10 vs. Kentucky. The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in each of the last seven games and have averaged only 12.3 miscues per game during this stretch. This year the team is averaging 13.8 miscues per game. Last year it was 15.3 per game. Indiana had only one turnover in the second half vs. Bowling Green.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good and one of those indicators is the team's total of 108 steals (9 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had seven games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and five games in double figures.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers held 8 opponents under 40% from the field last year but has already tied that mark this season. The only teams to shoot better than 40% were Seton Hall (40.3%), Syracuse (55.8%), Temple (42%) and Boise State (43.2%). The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in seven halves. IU's opponents come into today's game shooting just 39.3% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION BACK: Indiana has averaged 85.5 points per game in the last two games after averaging just 64.3 ppg in the six previous games. That total improved IU's season total to 73.6 points per game. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points four times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 303-18 when scoring 80 or more, 141-4 when scoring 90 or more (as they did with a season-high 91 vs. UAB) and 44-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana registered 5 blocks in the Indiana Classic. Kirk Haston leads the team with 11. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.3 blocks per game after averaging the same a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 13.7 points per game.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 334-44 (.884) in Assembly Hall including a 199-37 (.843) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 101-11 (.901) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 64-24 (.724) vs. ranked teams in the building. Indiana has also won 63 of its last 64 non-conference games in Assembly Hall dating back to 1984-85.

NEXT GAME: The Hoosiers host the annual Union Federal Hoosier Classic at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis Dec. 27 and 28. Indiana plays Drake in the first game of the tournament at 7 p.m. on the 27th while Ball State and Bucknell play at 9 p.m. Monday's consolation game begins at 4:45 p.m. with the championship game starting at 7 p.m. Both Indiana game will be televised on the ESPN Regional Network which includes WTTV Ch. 4 in Indianapolis.
