RODGERS ANNOUNCES INTENT TO TRANSFER
Bloomington, Ind. Indiana University today announced that backup quarterback Jay Rodgers has decided to transfer to a yet-to-be-determined Division I-AA institution. He will have one year of athletic eligibility remaining and, because he will be transferring to a I-AA school, will not be forced to sit out a year which he would have to do if he transferred to a Division I-A school.
"This is a good opportunity for Jay to continue his playing career," said head football coach Cam Cameron. "Jay did some really good things for us as a starter in 1997 and was a steadying influence for our young quarterbacks while playing in a reserve role this past season. We wish Jay nothing but the best."
During his IU career, Rodgers played in 32 games (15 starts). He started 11 games in 1997 and completed 192 of 330 passes for 2,156 yards. He threw six touchdown passes and 14 interceptions. This past season, Rodgers appeared in three games at quarterback and completed 5 of 9 passes for 54 yards. He threw one touchdown pass and two interceptions. He also served as the team's holder on kick placements.
"I am going to sit down with my parents during the holiday break to determine which school will best fit my abilities as a quarterback," said Rodgers. "I leave Indiana with mixed emotions because, while I am looking forward with great excitement, I am also leaving some great friends and good memories behind. I just think, at this time, that this is the best avenue for me to take to pursue my football career."
