INDIANA HOSTS HOOSIER CLASSIC
GAME #14 FACTS: Drake (5-3) vs. Indiana (11-2). Sunday (Dec. 27). Market Square Arena (16,350), Indianapolis, Ind. Game time is 7 p.m. ET. First round of the 17th annual Union Federal Hoosier Classic. Ball State and Bucknell are the other two teams in the tournament.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers host the Union Federal Hoosier Classic at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. This is Indiana's first game in a week and only second game in the last 15 days due to final exams and the holidays. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game 11-2 after defeating San Francisco 106-54 last Sunday. This tournament marks the conclusion of non-conference play for the Hoosiers.
TELEVISION: The Drake game will be broadcast by ESPN Regional Network. John Laskowski and Ted Kitchel call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer,Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 730 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 629-222 (.739). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 731-272 (.729). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 334-138 (.708). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight has never coached against Drake.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Drake are meeting for the eighth time. The Hoosiers lead the series 5-2. The teams last played Dec. 7, 1962 in a game Indiana lost 87-76 in Bloomington. Drake also has a two-game winning streak in the series. This would be the first time the teams have met on a neutral court. The Hoosiers are 38-8 against teams that are in the Missouri Valley Conference. The last time IU played a MVC team was earlier this season against Indiana State (W, 76-70). Indiana's 18 games against the Sycamores are the most against a MVC team.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are ranked 10th by ESPN/USA Today and Associated Press.
HOLIDAY CHEER: The Hoosiers have been a good team in December over the years. IU's record in the final month of the year since the 1990-91 season is 63-9 heading into the Union Federal Hoosier Classic. That mark includes a 5-1 record this season and 9-0 in 1990-91 which is the best mark during this span.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: Indiana has won the previous 16 Union Federal Hoosier Classics. Last year IU defeated Southwest Missouri State (78-66) and Western Michigan (70-63) to win the title. Current Hoosiers Luke Recker and Michael Lewis were named to the all-tournament team. Indiana's margin of victory in the previous 32 games stands at 24.6 points per game. The largest margin of victory was a 50-point (94-44) victory over Indiana State in 1991 while the smallest was a 5-point (77-72) win over Miami (O.) in 1984. Indiana's margin of victory has been less than 10 points only three times. Ball State played in the 1983 Hoosier Classic while this is the first appearance in the Union Federal Hoosier Classic for Bucknell and Drake.
HOOSIERS FEEL AT HOME IN NBA ARENAS: During the 1990's the Hoosiers have felt right at home playing in buildings NBA teams call home (at least up until this year). IU has played 32 such games during this span and is 27-5 in those contests. This season the team will play at least three games in such arenas (these two games and at least once at the United Center in Chicago at the Big Ten Tournament).
LAST GAME: (Indiana 106, San Francisco 54): Rob Turner scored 18 points and Larry Richardson had a career-high six blocks Sunday as the Hoosiers scored its highest point total of the season and beat San Francisco 106 54. The margin of victory was Indiana's largest of the season. A.J. Guyton scored 17 points for the Hoosiers while Luke Recker added 10. Recker also had a career-high 10 assists. James Lee and Ali Thomas led the Dons with 17 points each. The 106 points were the second-most allowed by San Francisco under Mathews. The Hoosiers forced 32 San Francisco turnovers, including 20 in the second half. Guyton scored 15 points in the first half when the Hoosiers took a 39-28 lead. Indiana built a 69-39 lead during a 30-11 run that opened the second half. Antwaan Randle El, Indiana's starting quarterback during the football season, saw his first action as a member of the basketball team. The freshman had 5 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in 5 minutes.
RECORDS FALL IN USF GAME: The Hoosiers set some records in the win over San Francisco. The 12 blocks are a school record breaking the old mark of 11 which was set twice before. The 88.9% shooting from 3-point range tied a school record which was set once before. IU's 29 assists tied for the second most in school history and was just one off the school mark of 30 set against Northwestern in 1981. The 17 steals tied a season-high and also ties for the fourth best single game mark in school history. IU's 66.7% shooting from the field tied for the eighth best single game mark which was set five previous times. Individually, Luke Recker had a career-high 10 assists
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: Indiana's 106 points was the most since the Hoosiers scored 110 against Iowa in the final regular season game of 1995. It was also only the third time IU has passed 100 points since that game. IU's 52-point margin of victory was its largest since a 94-44 victory over Indiana State in 1992. It was also the 45th time a Bob Knight-Indiana led team has cracked the century mark.
DOUBLE DIGIT WINS BEFORE LEAGUE PLAY: Indiana has registered double figures in wins this season before league play for the fifth time in the '90s. The other times this has happened was 10-0 in 1990, 12-0 in 1991, 11-2 in 1993 and 13-1 in 1997.
ALONG THOSE SAME LINES: Indiana has won 11 games this season in 13 games. Last year it took the Hoosiers 16 games to reach 11 wins.
THIS HAS BEEN SOME THREE-GAME STRETCH: The Hoosiers have been impressive in the last three games. They have averaged 92.3 points per game and have shot 58% from the field and 50% from 3-point range. They have also had only 37 turnovers while forcing 76. IU has 35 steals and 17 blocks as well. IU has held its opponents to just 58.3 ppg over this time and have gone to the free throw line 62 more times (96-34).
TURNER AND RICHARDSON CONTINUE GOOD PLAY.: Rob Turner and Larry Richardson have been vital parts of the Hoosier attack over the last three games. Turner has started each games and averaged 12 points per game (on 16-23 FGs) which included a season-high 18 vs. USF. He has recorded 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in the last three games. Turner was the team's high scorer which was only the second time this year that someone else other than Recker and Guyton had led the squad in scoring. Richardson scored a season-high 12 points vs. USF and is averaging 9.3 points and a team best 4.7 rebounds per game. He had a career-high 6 blocks vs. USF and has 11 in the last three games.
SO DOES GUYTON: A.J. Guyton is Indiana's leading scorer over the last three games at 21.3 a contest. He has broken out of his shooting slump as he has made 23-35 field goals and 6-10 3-pointers. The junior was also 12-14 from the line and had 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 assists during this stretch.
GUYTON CLOSES IN ON 3-POINT RECORDS: A.J. Guyton has 160 career 3 pointers and needs 7 more 3-pointers to move into second place on the school's all-time 3-point field goal list (Damon Bailey is second with 166). His 384 3-point attempts is now second on the all-time list surpassing Damon Bailey's 380. Brian Evans tops both lists at 186-456.
ANTWAAN FINALLY PLAYS: Antwaan Randle El made his first appearance in an Indiana basketball uniform vs. USF. He played 5 minutes and responded with 5 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Randle El, IU's starting quarterback, joined the basketball team in Maui but has not played due to a broken right hand which he suffered in his first basketball practice. He wore a soft cast against USF but that is expected to be off for this week's games.
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season with great success. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
TOUGH SCHEDULE PAYS OFF WITH HIGH RANKING: Indiana is ranked No. 4 in the latest RPI Index with a .695 ranking. Some of that lofty ranking might be in part to IU's tough schedule which is ranked 12th in the nation.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 11 wins and 2 losses this season. IU has shot 49% in the wins but just 38.7% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 42.3% in the victories and just 28.2% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is even in the wins but in the losses it drops to -10.5. The Hoosiers also average 23.8 free throw attempts in the wins and just 12 in the losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have been shooting better as of late as they made 98-169 field goals (58%) in the last three games. IU shot a season best 66.7% (40-60) vs. San Francisco which included a 73.5% (25-34) second half. Indiana has shot above 50% in each of the last three games which is the first time this season that had happened. Indiana has now shot 50% or better five times. Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1% but comes into tonight's game shooting 47.3%. IU has outshot its opponents in each victory.
LONG RANGERS: IU tied a school record vs. USF as they made 8-9 3 pointers. The Hoosiers have made 13-20 in the last two games and 17-34 in the last three games. The 88.9% game vs. USF was the fifth time this season the team has been above 40% from long range. IU has been under 36% from long range only three times this season. Indiana's 27 3-point attempts against Temple is a school record. The previous record was 25 vs. Iowa last year. The Hoosiers also tied a season-high with 9 3-pointers vs. the Owls.
CHARITY TOSSES: While the field goal shooting is up, Indiana is shooting just 66.7% from the line in the last three games. IU made just 18-31 vs. USF. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 195 but the opponents have attempted 203. In the last three games, IU made 64 while the opponents attempted just 34.
BOARD REPORT: The Hoosiers had a season-low 26 rebounds vs. USF but then again they only missed 20 shots. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game averaging 35.2 boards per game. IU has averaged 11.2 offensive rebounds in each of the last five games. Indiana comes into today's game with a rebounding margin for the season of -1.6.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers posted the second best mark in school history with 29 vs. USF. That was the second time this season they have been over 20. That put the Hoosiers average 21.3 assists per game over the last 3 contests. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 62.7% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 10 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only three games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 9-2 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers. IU has averaged only 11.6 miscues per game in the last five contests which includes a season-low 10 vs. Kentucky. The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in each of the last eight games and have averaged only 12.3 miscues per game during this stretch. This year the team is averaging 13.7 miscues per game. Last year it was 15.3 per game.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good and one of those indicators is the team's total of 125 steals (9.6 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had eight games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and six games in double figures. The Hoosiers tied a season best with 17 against USF. That also tied for the fourth-highest mark in school history.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers held 8 opponents under 40% from the field last year but has already tied that mark this season. The only teams to shoot better than 40% were Seton Hall (40.3%), Syracuse (55.8%), Temple (42%), Boise State (43.2%) and USF (42.9%). The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in seven halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting just 39.5% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION BACK: Indiana has averaged 92.3 points per game in the last three games after averaging just 64.3 ppg in the six previous games. That total improved IU's season total to 76.1 points per game. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in four different games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points five times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 304-18 when scoring 80 or more, 142-4 when scoring 90 or more and 45-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana registered a school record 12 blocks vs. USF. In fact that was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team registered double figures in blocks. The 12 swats equals the total the team had in the five previous games combined. Larry Richardson leads the team with 13. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.9 blocks per game after averaging the same a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 17.1 points per game overall and 34 a game in the last three contests.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 214 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 335-44 (.884) in Assembly Hall including a 199-37 (.843) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 102-11 (.903) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 64-24 (.724) vs. ranked teams in the building.
SCHEDULE NOTES: Indiana's game at Iowa Thursday (Dec. 31) has been changed to 6 p.m. ET. That game will be televised on the ESPN Regional Network which includes WTTV Ch. 4 in Indianapolis. The game can also be heard on the IU Radio Network. The time for Indiana's Jan. 3 game at home vs. Illinois should be set next week after CBS finalizes its NFL playoff broadcast schedule. The game will either be at 1 or 4 p.m.
NEXT GAME: The Hoosiers play either Ball State or Bucknell in the second round of the Union Federal Hoosier Classic tomorrow. Monday's consolation game begins at 4:45 p.m. with the championship game starting at 7 p.m. The Indiana game will be televised on the ESPN Regional Network which includes WTTV Ch. 4 in Indianapolis. #10 ANTWAAN RANDLE EL: Indiana's starting quarterback who joined the basketball team in Maui. . .broke the first metacarpal bone in his right hand in practice Nov. 28 but returned to action, wearing a soft cast, vs. USF. . .scored 5 points and added 2 rebounds and 2 assists in just 5 minutes. . .very quick, aggressive defensive player and an excellent passer.
