INDIANA LOSES TO MICHIGAN IN BIG TEN OPENER
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's women's basketball team's nine-game winning streak was halted Monday evening as the Hoosiers lost to Michigan 72-58 in its Big Ten Conference season opener in Assembly Hall.
With the loss the Hoosiers drop to 11-4 overall, 0-1 Big Ten, while the Wolverines improve to 9-1 overall, 1-0 in league play.
Indiana jumped out to 17-8 lead to start the game but Michigan charged back to take a one-point 25-24 lead with 1:43 left before the half. Cindy Kerns then connected in the paint to give IU the 26-25 halftime advantage.
The game swayed back and forth in the second half until UM's Anne Miller broke a 32-all tie that led to an 16-0 run by the Wolverines. From there, Michigan went up by as many as 22 points at 60-38 with the Hoosiers unable to make a run of their own.
Jill Chapman led IU with 16 points and 11 rebounds in her Big Ten rookie debut while Cindy Kerns chipped in 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Dani Thrush addded 10 points.
Kenisha Walker led Michigan with 27 points and 11 boards.
"I feel that we got off to a quick start tonight but for some reason we struggled against their zone," said Jim Izard. "We were flat and shot the ball poorly. Their transition game also hurt us."
