INDIANA BEGINS CONFERENCE AT IOWA
GAME #16 FACTS: Indiana (13-2, 0-0 Big Ten) at Iowa (9-1, 0-0 Big Ten). Thursday (Dec. 31). Carver-Hawkeye Arena (15,500), Iowa City, Iowa. Game time is 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers open conference play this evening at Iowa. This is the third in a stretch of five games in 10 days for Indiana. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game 13-2 after defeating Ball State 72-62 Monday.
TELEVISION: The Iowa game will be broadcast by ESPN Regional Network. Larry Morgan and John Laskowski call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 733 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 631-222 (.740). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 733-272 (.729). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 334-138 (.708). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 32-19 vs. Iowa overall and at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Iowa are meeting for the 144th time. The Hoosiers lead the series 84-59 but the Hawkeyes have won the last four and five of the last seven games. Iowa has also won the last four games in Iowa City as the last Hoosier win in Carver-Hawkeye Arena was Jan. 11, 1994 (89-75). Indiana's last win in the series was Jan. 30, 1996 (76-73) in Bloomington. Indiana leads the all-time series in games played at Iowa 36-35.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are ranked 8th by the Associated Press and 10th by ESPN/USA Today.
BIG TEN OPENERS: Tonight's game is the first time in three years Indiana has opened the conference season on the road. The Hoosiers and Hawkeyes met in the season-opener last year in Bloomington and in Iowa City to start the 1995 league season.
NEW YEAR'S EVE: Tonight's game is IU's sixth on New Year's Eve. The Hoosiers are 3-2 in the previous five games.
INDIANA'S BIG TEN HISTORY: Indiana is beginning its 92nd season of Big Ten basketball. IU began playing in the league in 1905 but the did not play in 1907 and 1908. Indiana's 19 titles are the second-highest mark in the league. The Hoosiers are the winningest team in league history at 59.6%.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 72, Ball State 62): Indiana ended a perfect run at Market Square Arena. Playing their last game in the 25-year-old building, the Hoosiers beat Ball State 72-62 to win the Hoosier Classic. Luke Recker scored 17 points for Indiana, which improved to 42-0 at Market Square, including 34-0 in the Hoosier Classic. The arena is scheduled to be torn down when the Conseco Fieldhouse is completed in 1999. The Hoosiers trailed by 4 points at halftime, but opened the second half with a 19-5 run to take a 10-point lead. William Gladness added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Indiana. The Cardinals were led by Duane Clemens with 16 points and Marcus Mason with 12. After Ball State pulled within 5 points in the second half, Indiana started to pick apart the Cardinals' zone defense. Gladness sparked the surge, feeding Kirk Haston for a layup, then making a steal before hitting two free throws and a driving shot with 5:48 to play to make it 68-56. Indiana then made 3-4 free throws to take a 70 56 lead with five minutes left, and Ball State got no closer than 10 after that. The lead changed hands several times in the first half. The Hoosiers took a 34-33 lead on a free throw by Dane Fife with 3:23 to go, but the Cardinals then outscored the Hoosiers 7-2 to take the 4-point halftime lead.
LAST YEAR'S MEETINGS: (Iowa 89, Indiana 76, Dec. 31, 1997, Bloomington): Iowa broke open a close game in the second half as they used an 18-4 run to break a 63-63 tie to win the Big Ten opener for both teams. Iowa's Ryan Bowen scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half and also garnered 14 rebounds and 5 steals. Ricky Davis led Iowa with 22 points. The Hoosiers shot only 41.2% (28-68) while Iowa shot 53.1%. Luke Recker led the Hoosiers with 19 points while Andrae Patterson added 17 points and 9 rebounds.
(Iowa 84, Indiana 70, Feb. 28, 1998 , Iowa City): Indiana jumped out to a 16-4 lead at the start of the game but the Hawkeyes came back to lead at the half 39-38. Indiana then led 64-61 with 7:20 to play but Iowa responded with a 23-6 run to finish the game and won 84-70. Indiana shot only 45% while Iowa shot 46.7%. A.J. Guyton led the Hoosiers with 18 points while William Gladness added 15, Luke Recker 14 and Michael Lewis 10. The Hoosiers made 6-12 3-pointers in the first half but were able to make only 1-10 in the second half. Iowa also won the battle of the boards 43-35.

HOLIDAY CHEER: The Hoosiers have been a good team in December over the years. IU's record in the final month of the year since the 1990-91 season is 65-9 heading into tonight's game. That mark includes a 7-1 record this season and 9-0 in 1990-91 which is the best mark during this span.
LOTS OF GAMES: The 15 games Indiana has played this non-conference season is the most in school history before the Big Ten season. The previous high was 14 set in 1988-89 and 1996-97). The most non conference games Indiana has ever played in a season is 17 which occurred in 1981, 1989 and 1993. As of Tuesday, Indiana had played more games, and have won more games (13), this season than any other school in the nation.
DOUBLE YOUR FUN: William Gladness leads the Hoosiers this season with four double-doubles. His most recent came against Ball State with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Kirk Haston has two double-figure point-rebound games while Luke Recker had 10 points and 10 assists vs. San Francisco.
RECORDS FALL IN RECENT GAMES: The Hoosiers recent good play has translated into team school records and other marks being set. Indiana's 12 blocks vs. San Francisco is the most in school history (old mark was 11 set twice before). Indiana's 88.9% 3-point field goal percentage vs. San Francisco tied the school record set once before. Indiana's 20 steals vs. Drake is a school record (old mark was 19 set twice before). Indiana's 29 assists vs. San Francisco was the second-highest single game total in school history (30 vs. Northwestern, 1981). Indiana's 66.7% field goal percentage vs. San Francisco (40-60) tied for the eighth-highest mark in school history (set five previous times).
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK: Indiana's consecutive 100+-point games vs. San Francisco and Drake was the sixth time that had happened in school history and the first time since 1993-94. The 56-point victory over Drake was the second-largest margin victory in school history (65 vs. Notre Dame, 92-29, 1972). The consecutive 50-point victories was the first time that had happened in school history. The 100+-point games was also the 45th and 46th time a Bob Knight-led Indiana team has cracked the century mark.
DOUBLE DIGIT WINS BEFORE LEAGUE PLAY: Indiana registered double figures in wins this season before league play for the fifth time in the '90s. The other times this has happened was 10-0 in 1990, 12-0 in 1991, 11-2 in 1993 and 13-1 in 1997.
THIS HAS BEEN SOME FIVE-GAME STRETCH: The Hoosiers have been impressive in the last five games. They have averaged 90.2 points per game and have shot 55.6% from the field and 45.3% from 3-point range. They have also had only 65 turnovers while forcing 124. IU had 61 steals and 24 blocks as well. IU held its opponents to just 56.6 ppg over this time and have gone to the free throw line 91 more times (154-63).
GUYTON CLOSES IN ON 3-POINT RECORDS: A.J. Guyton has 162 career 3 pointers and needs 5 more 3-pointers to move into second place on the school's all-time 3-point field goal list (Damon Bailey is second with 166). His 389 3-point attempts is second on the all-time list surpassing Damon Bailey's 380. Brian Evans tops both lists at 186-456.
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana has had the ability to come back in games this season with great success. The Hoosiers notched their fifth come-from behind victory as they erased a 4-point halftime deficit vs. Ball State. Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won. IU was down by 9 with 68 seconds to play vs. Kentucky and managed to tie the game and send it into overtime.
WINS AND LOSSES: There have been some interesting differences in the 13 wins and 2 losses this season. IU has shot 49.5% in the wins but just 38.7% in the losses. The Hoosiers have also shot 42% in the victories and just 28.2% in the losses from 3-point range. IU's rebounding margin is +0.7 in the wins but in the losses it drops to -10.5. The Hoosiers also average 24.6 free throw attempts in the wins and just 12 in the losses.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers had a string of four consecutive games above 50% snapped with a 43.6% game vs. Ball State. That came on the heels of a 63.3% effort in the two previous games in which they shot a season best 66.7% (40-60) vs. San Francisco which included a 73.5% (25 34) second half. Indiana has shot 50% or better six times. Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1% but comes into tonight's game shooting 47.9%. IU has outshot its opponents in each victory.
LONG RANGERS: IU made just 12-30 3-pointers in the two games in Indianapolis after tying a school record vs. USF as they made 8-9. Indiana did manage to make 6-13 vs. Drake which marked the sixth time this season the team has been above 40% from long range. IU has been under 36% from long range only three times this season. Indiana's 27 3-point attempts against Temple is a school record. The previous record was 25 vs. Iowa last year. The Hoosiers also tied a season-high with 9 3-pointers vs. the Owls.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana broke out a foul shooting slump in the last two games as they connected on 42-58 (72.4%). In the two games prior to that IU had made just 34-58 (58.6%). Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 237 and the opponents have attempted 232. In the last five games, IU has made 106 while the opponents attempted just 63.
BOARD REPORT: Indiana's rebounding margin in the last five games is +1.8. IU has outrebounded four of its last six opponents. The Hoosiers come into tonight's game averaging 35.6 boards per game. Indiana comes into tonight's game with a rebounding margin for the season of -0.8.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers posted 13 assists vs. Ball State after having 55 in the two previous games. IU has posted at least 20 assists three different times this season. Over the last five games IU has averaged 20.6 assists per game. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season but are at 63.1% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 12 times this season. The Hoosiers have had only three games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 11-2 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers. IU has averaged only 13 miscues per game in the last five contests. The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in nine of the last 10 games and have averaged only 12.6 miscues per game during this stretch. This year the team is averaging 13.7 miscues per game. Last year it was 15.3 per game.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good and one of those indicators is the team's total of 151 steals (10.1 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had nine games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and seven games in double figures. The Hoosiers set a school record with 20 vs. Drake. At the current pace of over 10 a game, the Hoosiers would easily break the school record of 250 set in 1992.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held 9 opponents under 40% from the field this year after doing so only 8 times all of last season. The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in 10 halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting just 39% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION BACK: Indiana has averaged 90.2 points per game in the last five games after averaging just 64.3 ppg in the six previous games. That total improved IU's season total to 77.5 points per game. That average is the highest since 1993-94 when IU averaged 80.9 a contest. The Hoosiers scored 67 points in the second half vs. USF which was more points than the team has scored in four different games this season. Indiana has managed to score 80 or more points six times this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 305-18 when scoring 80 or more, 143-4 when scoring 90 or more and 46-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: After registering a school record 12 blocks vs. USF, Indiana had just 7 in the two games of the Hoosier Classic. The 12 blocks was only the seventh time in school history an Indiana team has registered double figures in blocks. Larry Richardson and Kirk Haston lead the team with 15. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.9 blocks per game after averaging the same a year ago.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 19.6 points per game overall and 33.6 a game in the last five victories.
STREAKING HOOSIERS: Indiana comes into tonight's game with a five game winning streak. That is the second-longest of the season after the team opened the year winning its first six games.
