HOOSIERS HOST TEMPLE
GAME #9 FACTS: Temple (4-2) at Indiana (7-1). Saturday (Dec. 5). Assembly Hall (17,357), Bloomington, Ind. Game time is 12 p.m. ET.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play their first home game in over 2 1/2 weeks this afternoon as they host No. 10 Temple. Indiana has played only two of its first eight games this season in Assembly Hall. Indiana comes into the game with a 7-1 record after a 76-72 overtime victory at Notre Dame last Tuesday.
TELEVISION: The Temple game will be broadcast by ESPN. Dave Barnett and Quinn Buckner call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 727 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 625-221 (.738). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 727-271 (.728). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 334-138 (.708). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 3-1 vs. Temple overall and 1-1 while at Indiana.
CLOSING IN ON 1,000: Today's game is Indiana head coach Bob Knight's 999th career game. Game No. 1,000 comes Tuesday in Louisville against Kentucky. He will become the 16th coach in NCAA history to reach this milestone. Mt. St. Mary's head coach Jim Phelan is the all-time leader at 1,213 which was accomplished from 1955-present.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Temple are meeting for the fifth time. The series is tied at 2-2 after Temple won last year's game 59-53 in Philadelphia. The teams also met in the 1994 NCAA Tournament and the Hoosiers won that game 67-58. Prior to the last two meetings, the teams met in 1933 and 1934 in Philadelphia. This is the first game between the schools in Bloomington.
HOOSIERS VS. THE ATLANTIC 10: Indiana is 19-4 all-time vs. teams in the Atlantic 10. The 7 games played between IU and Xavier are the most for the Hoosiers against a Atlantic 10 team. The last time the Hoosiers played a team from the Atlantic 10 was last year's Temple game.
LAST MEETING: (Temple 59, Indiana 53, Nov. 14, 1997, Philadelphia): Costly turnovers were the Hoosiers downfall as they dropped the season opener by six. The Hoosiers broke a 24-24 tie by closing out the first half with a 5-0 run. Temple started the second half with an 8-0 run and held a 38-31 lead with 15 minutes to play. The Hoosiers came back to tie the game at 44 and 46 before taking a 47-46 lead with 8 minutes to play. Temple's defense then held IU without a point until 2:10 to play but by then the Owls led 55-49. IU committed 23 turnovers which led to 27 Temple points. A.J. Guyton led IU with 15 points while William Gladness had 13 points and 9 rebounds. Andrae Patterson had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are ranked 16th by ESPN/USA Today and the Associated Press.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 76, Notre Dame 72, OT): Indiana, which usually thrives at the foul line, almost lost because of poor free-throw shooting. The Hoosiers missed 9-15 free throws over the last eight minutes in a 76-72 overtime victory over Notre Dame. Luke Recker scored 27 points for Indiana, which shot only 55 percent (15-of-27) from the line. The poor foul shooting hurt the Hoosiers the most in the final 2:30 of regulation. The Hoosiers led 64-61 after William Gladness missed one of two foul shots. Jarrad Odle missed two more, and then Notre Dame tied the game after Antoni Wyche hit all three of his free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt with less than two minutes to play. Michael Lewis and Odle each went 1-2 from the line as Indiana took a 66-64 lead before Jimmy Dillon sent the game into overtime with an off balance, one-handed shot in the lane. The Hoosiers then shot 2-6 from the line in the final 80 seconds of overtime before escaping with the win. Notre Dame led by 11 points in the second half before IU rallied to take a 48-47 lead on Lewis' 3-pointer with 10 minutes left. The Irish took a 6-point lead three minutes later before the Hoosiers answered with an 11-7 run during which Recker scored seven points. Dane Fife scored 13 points for Indiana. The Hoosiers trailed at halftime for the fourth time this season after Notre Dame closed the period with an 11-2 run, including five points from Murphy. The freshman finished with 11 points and seven rebounds in the first half.
COME FROM BEHIND ONCE AGAIN: Indiana's overtime victory at Notre Dame was the third come-from-behind victory of the season already for the Hoosiers. They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won.
EXTRA TIME: Indiana's overtime victory at Notre Dame was IU's first overtime game since last year's NCAA Tournament victory over Oklahoma in the first round. After playing four overtime games in 1996-97, the game against Oklahoma was IU's only overtime game last year. Indiana has now gone 4-2 in its last six overtime games.
GOOD START COMES TO AN END: The Hoosiers season-opening winning streak came to an halt at 6 after the loss to Syracuse. This was the sixth time in Coach Knight's 28 years Indiana started the season at least 6-0. In three of those five seasons, the Hoosiers went on to win the Big Ten title (1975, 1976, 1983). They also went on to register 20 or more wins four times and 30 or more twice (31 in 1975, 32 in 1976, 24 in 1983 and 22 in 1997)
GUYTON STAYS TRUE TO FORM AFTER A BAD GAME: A.J. Guyton has been held under 10 points in 17 career games but has come back in the next game to average 17.1 points per game. That was the case after being held scoreless vs. Syracuse as the junior came back with 17 at Notre Dame.
MORE ON GUYTON: A.J. Guyton's school record streak of making at least one 3-pointer in consecutive games came to an end in Maui as he did not score against Syracuse. Prior to that game he had made at least one 3 in 39 consecutive games. The previous school record was 20 held by Jay Edwards in 1989.
FIFE STARTS, RESPONDS: Dane Fife was back in the starting lineup at Notre Dame and responded with career highs of 13 points and 7 rebounds. After scoring 8 points in the season opener against Seton Hall he scored only 9 points in the next six games before the ND contest. He was 4-4 from the field and 2-2 from long range vs. the Irish and also made 3-4 free throws. He has also registered a season best 3 assists in each of the last two games.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers shot 47.3% (26-55) at Notre Dame after shooting just 38.5% from the field in the three games in Maui. The 47.3% game at ND was the third best shooting game of the season. Still the Hoosiers have not shot 50% or better in any of their last four games which is its longest such stretch of the season. Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1% but comes into today's game shooting just 45.3%. IU has still outshot their opponents 7 times and has won each of those games.
LONG RANGERS: Indiana made a season best 9-17 3-pointers at Notre Dame. That was the first time this season the Hoosiers have been above 50% from 3-point range. That 52.9% mark was an improvement from a season-low 6-22 game vs. Syracuse and 33.3% mark in the three games in Maui. IU has been below 36% from long range only once this season. Overall, the Hoosiers have shot at least 43% from long range in three of the last five games.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana had made 22-28 (78.6%) in the two previous games to the Notre Dame contest where they made just 15-27. The Hoosiers missed some free throws at the end of regulation and in overtime which would have sealed the victory sooner at Notre Dame. However, IU's 27 attempts at ND was the third-highest mark of the season. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 119 and the opponents have attempted 125.
BOARD REPORT: The Hoosiers won the battle of the boards three times in the first four games while in the other game, the rebounding was tied. However the Hoosiers have been outrebounded in each of the last four games by an average of 8.3 per game. Indiana has averaged only 34 rebounds per game over the last four games while the opponents have averaged 42.3 a contest. Indiana comes into today's game with a rebounding margin for the season of -2.6.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers had a season-high 22 assists against UAB but have not registered over 20 in any of the last four games. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season and are at 63.8% this year. The Hoosiers have had only two games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers were 13-4 last season when they committed the same or less number of turnovers. This season they are 7 1. The Hoosiers have averaged only 13.8 miscues per game over the last four games. The total includes a season-low 12 which was posted in each of the last two games in Maui. This year the team is averaging 15 miscues per game. Last year that was 15.3 per game.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good in the early going and one of those indicators is the team's total of 80 steals in the first eight games (10 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had six games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and four games in double figures. The Hoosiers have registered 23 steals in the last two games after posting a season-low 4 against Utah.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers held 8 opponents under 40% from the field last year but has already done this six times this season. The only teams to shoot better than 40% were Seton Hall (40.3%) and Syracuse (55.8%). The Hoosiers went through one stretch already this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in five halves. IU's opponents come into today's game shooting just 39% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION OFF: Indiana's 76 points at Notre Dame was the first time in four games it had scored over 75 points after doing so in each of the first four games of the season. IU went to Maui averaging a season best 81.5 points per game but that now stands at 73.5 per contest. Indiana has still managed to score over 80 twice this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 301-18 when scoring 80 or more, 140 4 when scoring 90 or more (as they did with a season-high 91 vs. UAB) and 44-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has registered a season-high 5 blocks in three consecutive games before having just 5 combined in the last three games. Kirk Haston leads the team with 8. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.3 blocks per game after averaging 3.3 a year ago.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 206 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 12.3 points per game.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 331-44 (.883) in Assembly Hall including a 199-37 (.843) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 98-11 (.899) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 63-24 (.724) vs. ranked teams in the building. Indiana has also won 60 of its last 61 non-conference games in Assembly Hall dating back to 1984-85.
