HOOSIERS SWEEP UNI ADVANCE IN NCAAs Fayetteville, Ark. -- The Indiana Hoosiers snapped a 23-match Northern Iowa win streak in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a 17-15, 15-7, 15-5 sweep. The victory was Indiana's first in the NCAA Tournament in school history. In 1995, the only other Hoosier appearance, the team lost 3-0 to George Mason.
Junior Ryann Connors led the Indiana attack with 15 kills. Sophomore Amanda Welter was also in double-figures with 13 kills. The Hoosiers dominated at the service line as the recorded 10 aces to zero for the Panthers. Senior Jen Magelssen had a trio of aces including two in the first game.
In game one, the momentum was back and forth as Indiana spotted Northern Iowa a 2-0 lead. Indiana was up 7-5 and then down 10-7. Connors' fourth kill of the game gave the Hoosiers a 12-10 lead. Once again, the Panthers came back to tie the game at 12-12. Another kill by Connors gave the Hoosiers game point at 14-12. However, UNI proceded to tie the game at 14-14 and 15-15 before Melissa Rooney served Indiana's fifth ace to make the score 17-15 in Indiana's favor.
Game two was much different as Indiana settled down and jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 12-5. Northern Iowa didn't die easily as they made the game 12-7. A pair of aces by Kristina Sanderson put Indiana up 14-7. Her attempt to finish the game was just wide, but on Indiana's next possesion, Welter and Cydyrce Carter teamed for a block and sent the Hoosiers to the lockeroom with a 2-0 lead.
The third game was the same as the second with the Hoosiers up 10-3 quickly. In the final game, Magelssen served her third ace of the match and 197th of her career. She is also nine kills short of setting the Indiana career record for kills.
Head coach Katie Weismiller was very pleased with Indiana's performance in the first round, "It took a while to settle down and get into our game. We were definitely nervous. We served tough tonight and allowed our blocks to set up. We also did a nice job of passing and our setter (Sanderson) did a great job of running the offense."Indiana will play No. 13 Arkansas tomorrow at 8 p.m. EST.
