ARKANSAS ENDS INDIANA'S SEASON
Fayetteville, Ark. -- After winning their first ever post-season match, the Indiana Hoosiers fell to the 13th-ranked Arkansas Lady'Backs in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In the first round win over Northern Iowa the Hoosiers used 10 service aces, but against Arkansas, Indiana recorded eight service errors. The Lady'Backs also won the battle at the net with a .366 attack percentage to .134 for Indiana while outblocking the Hoosiers 12-4
Indiana finished the season with a 17-14 record.
In game one, Indiana held an early 6-3 lead, ut were unable to hang on as Arkansas came back and won 15-8. The Hoosiers were led by outside hitter Ryann Connors with six kills. Senior Jen Magelssen added five kills in the game and tied the Indiana career kills record at 1,381. Her first kill in game two set the new mark (1,382) that was last held by Liz Arbrustmacher (1985-88).
Game two was all Arkansas as the Hoosiers spotted the home team a 6-0 lead. Indiana could only get as close as 10-5 before the Lady'Backs finished the game at 15-5. Arkansas used five team blocks to hold the Hoosiers to .023 attack percentage while they hit .343.
In the third and final game, the Hoosiers opened up a 4-1 lead, but Arkansas came storming back including 10 straight points to win the game and move on to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in the program's history.
Head coach Katie Weismiller credited Arkansas with a strong performance. "I felt we were in game one. We sided out with them, but we struggled scoring points. Arkansas is a good team."
Connors finished the match with 13 kills to lead Indiana. Senior Melissa Rooney added 13 kills and 11 digs while Magelssen had 11 kills and 10 digs. Jessica Field led the Arkansas attack with 12 kills and a .706 attack percentage and Kim Storey added 13 kills and hit .520.
Magelssen ends her career as one of the best players to play for the Hoosiers. She now holds career records for kills, digs, and service aces. In four years she totaled 1,387 kills, 1,331 digs, and 197 service aces.
