INDIANA TAKES ON KENTUCKY
GAME #10 FACTS: Indiana (8-1) vs. Kentucky (7-1). Tuesday (Dec. 8). Freedom Hall (20,000), Louisville, Ky. Game time is 7:30 p.m. ET.
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play their sixth neutral site game of the year tonight as they play No. 5 Kentucky. Indiana comes into the game with a 8-1 record after a 63-62 last second victory over then No. 10 Temple last Saturday.
TELEVISION: The Kentucky game will be broadcast by ESPN. Brad Nessler and Dick Vitale call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame fun begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT. . . is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 728 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 28th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 626-221 (.738). Knight is in his 34th season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 728-271 (.728). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 334-138 (.708). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 14-17 vs. Kentucky overall and 14-16 while at Indiana.
CAREER GAME No. 1,000 FOR COACH KNIGHT: Tonight's game is Indiana head coach Bob Knight's 1000th career game. He is the 16th coach in NCAA history to reach this milestone. Mt. St. Mary's head coach Jim Phelan is the all-time leader at 1,220 which has accomplished from 1955-present.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Kentucky are meeting for the 42nd time. Kentucky leads the series 21-20 after winning last year's game 75-72 at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. The Wildcats have also won the last four and six of the last seven meetings. Indiana's last win in the series came on Dec. 4, 1993 in Indianapolis (96-84). This is the sixth time the teams have played in Louisville and Kentucky leads the series in those games 3-2 as they have won the last three games in Freedom Hall. All-time in this series, which dates back to 1924, the Wildcats lead in netural site games 11-8
HOOSIERS VS. THE SEC: Indiana is 47-23 all-time vs. teams in the Southeastern Conference. The 41 games played between IU and Kentucky are the most for the Hoosiers against a SEC team. The last time the Hoosiers played a team from the SEC was against South Carolina earlier this season (W, 76-55).
LAST MEETING: (Kentucky 75, Indiana 72, Dec. 6, 1997, Indianapolis): A.J. Guyton missed a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Hoosiers lost by 3 to Kentucky. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 15-7 lead but Kentucky came back to hold a 46-39 halftime advantage. The Wildcats then led by 10 midway through the second half. The Hoosiers battled back and cut the lead to 3 at 70-67 and to 2 at 74-72. UK's Wayne Turner then made only one of two free throws before Guyton missed the game-tying shot. Rob Turner led the Hoosiers with 25 points, 19 of which came in the first half. Guyton had 19 points and a team-high 8 rebounds and 6 assists.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS: The Hoosiers are ranked 11th by ESPN/USA Today and were 16th in last week's Associated Press rankings.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 63, Temple 62): A.J. Guyton, off target from 3-point range for most of the game, connected with 5.5 seconds left as Indiana rallied to beat 10th-ranked Temple 63-62. Indiana overcame a 9-point deficit in the final eight minutes. Temple took its biggest lead of the game at 52-43 on a free throw by Lamont Barnes. Kirk Haston, who came off the bench to score 12 points, then started the comeback with a layup and two free throws. Indiana tied the score at 58 on consecutive 3 pointers by Luke Recker and Guyton, who had missed his first eight shots from behind the arc and then made his final two. Barnes, who led the Owls with 16 points, gave Temple a 60-58 lead with 2:14 remaining with two free throws. Indiana tied the score for the last time on a turnaround basket by Lynn Washington with 1:38 left. Temple took the lead on a tip-in by Barnes with 18.1 seconds to go. Guyton's game-winner produced the ninth lead change in a game that was tied nine times. Recker topped Indiana with 15 points. The Hoosiers made just 9-27 attempts from 3 point range with 3 of them coming in the final 3:37. The Hoosiers led 30 29 at the break, having hit 13-30 shots and only 3-12 from behind the arc. Temple was 10-24 from the field and hit on just 3-11 3-point attempts. Indiana's biggest lead of game was four points in the first half.
COMEBACK KIDS: Indiana's last second victory over Temple was the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season. With 8:42 left, IU was down by 9 (52-43) and with 3:54 left, IU was 6 points down (56-50). They trailed by 19 at the half (45-26) to Indiana State and came back and won 76-70. They trailed by 18 (47-29) with 18:50 to play vs. Kansas State and won 71-70 and they trailed by 11 (45-34) with 17:03 to play vs. Notre Dame and won.
GUYTON USUALLY BETTER AFTER SINGLE FIGURES: A.J. Guyton has been held under 10 points 18 times in his career. Although the junior was held scoreless against Syracuse, he came back in the next game to score 17 versus Notre Dame. Guyton was held to only 8 points against Temple. After the previous 17 games, he came back to average 17.1 points per game in the next contest.
MORE ON GUYTON: A.J. Guyton's school record streak of making at least one 3-pointer in consecutive games came to an end in Maui as he did not score against Syracuse. Prior to that game he had made at least one 3 in 39 consecutive games. The previous school record was 20 held by Jay Edwards in 1989.
WHAT A SCHEDULE: Tonight's game is the fourth game in the last five against a nationally ranked opponent. The other games were against No. 18 Utah, No. 19 Syracuse, and No. 10 Temple. The Hoosiers have gone 2-1 in those games.
CLOSE CALLS: In the last five games, Indiana has played two 1-point games, a 3-point game, and a 4-point game. IU won all four of those games. During those close contests, the Hoosiers have done a good job taking care of the ball as they have averaged only 13.8 turnovers per game in those four victories.
SOMETHING YOU DON'T SEE EVERYDAY: The Hoosiers were only 4-6 from the foul line against Temple. More amazing than that was the fact no Indiana starter attempted a free throw in the game.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have shot 44.7% (51-114) in the last two games. This comes on the heels of shooting just 38.5% from the field in the three games in Maui. The Hoosiers have not shot 50% or better in any of their last five games which is its longest such stretch of the season. Indiana was the top shooting team in the Big Ten last season at 49.1% but comes into tonight's game shooting just 44.9%. IU has still outshot their opponents 8 times and has won each of those games.
LONG RANGERS: The 27 3-point attempts Indiana had against Temple is a school record. The previous record was 25 vs. Iowa last year. The Hoosiers tied a season-high with 9 3-pointers vs. the Owls. IU has made 18 3's the past two games which is the best two-game stretch of the season. The 33.3% game against Temple was only the second time IU has been below 36% all season. Overall, the Hoosiers have shot at least 43% from long range in three of the last five games.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana had a season low of 4-6 from the free throw line against Temple. The last time Indiana attempted as few as 6 free throws was in the final game of the 1994 season when they made 4-5 vs. Boston College in the NCAA Tournament Regional Semifinal. The Hoosiers have made only 19-33 (57.6%) free throws in the last two games. Over the years one of Indiana's keys to success has been making more free throws than its opponents attempt. This year IU has made 123 and the opponents have attempted 142.
BOARD REPORT: The Hoosiers won the rebounding battle against Temple 38-26 which broke a string of five consecutive games in which Indiana had been out rebounded. The 13 offensive rebounds Indiana had against Temple tied a season high. Temple's 6 offensive rebounds and 26 total boards were both opponent season lows. That was also the first time the Hoosiers held their opponent under 30 rebounds this season. IU's 38 rebounds were the most in five games and tied the third best mark of the season. Indiana comes into tonight's game with a rebounding margin for the season of -1.0.
ASSIST ANGLE: The Hoosiers had a season-high 22 assists against UAB but have not registered over 20 in any of the last five games. Indiana had an assist on 64.6% of their field goals last season and are at 64.2% this year. Indiana has tallied more assists than their opponents 7 times this season. Over the last three contests, IU has averaged 16.3 assists. The Hoosiers have had only two games this season where they have had more turnovers than assists.
TURNOVER TALE: The Hoosiers are 6-1 when they commit the same or less number of turnovers. The 11 turnovers IU committed against Temple was a season low. The Hoosiers have had less than 15 turnovers in each of the last four games and have averaged only 12.8 miscues per game during this stretch. This year the team is averaging 14.6 miscues per game. Last year that was 15.3 per game.
A STEAL OF A TIME: Indiana's defense has been good in the early going and one of those indicators is the team's total of 83 steals in the first nine games (9.2 per game). Last year the team averaged just over 7 a contest. Indiana has had six games in which it has registered at least 9 steals and four games in double figures. The Hoosiers had registered 23 steals in the last two games before posting a season-low 3 against Temple.
ON THE DEFENSE: The Hoosiers held 8 opponents under 40% from the field last year but has already done this six times this season. The only teams to shoot better than 40% were Seton Hall (40.3), Syracuse (55.8%) and Temple (42%). The Hoosiers went through one stretch this season where they allowed no more than 10 field goals in six of seven consecutive halves (second half of Indiana State game through Utah game). Indiana has also allowed single figures in field goals in five halves. IU's opponents come into tonight's game shooting just 39.3% from the field.
POINT PRODUCTION OFF: During this recent stretch of close games, points have been hard to come by. Over the last five games the Hoosiers have averaged just 65 a contest. That average has dropped IU's season mark to 72.3 points per game. Indiana has still managed to score over 80 twice this season. When the Hoosiers do score 80 or more points it usually means a victory. During Coach Knight's 28 years the Hoosiers are 301-18 when scoring 80 or more, 140-4 when scoring 90 or more (as they did with a season-high 91 vs. UAB) and 44-0 when scoring 100 or more points.
BLOCK PARTY: Indiana has registered a season-high 5 blocks in three consecutive games before having just 7 combined in the last four games. Kirk Haston leads the team with 8. The Hoosiers are averaging 3.2 blocks per game after averaging 3.3 a year ago.
DID YOU KNOW... over the last eight years the Hoosiers have led the Big Ten in scoring? During this span IU has averaged 79.1 points per game in conference play and have finished in the top half of the league in scoring every season.
ONE OF THE TOPS IN THE NATION: During the 1990's Indiana has been one of the top teams in college basketball. The Hoosiers have won 206 games this decade which makes them one of only 13 teams to have won 200 or more games during this span.
BIG WINNERS: When the Hoosiers win they usually have a tendency to win big. Last season they won 13 games by 11 or more points and 19 contests by 6 or more points. This season the margin of victory stands at 10.8 points per game but the last four victories have been by a grand total of 9 points.
HOOSIERS IN ASSEMBLY HALL: The Hoosiers are 332-44 (.883) in Assembly Hall including a 199-37 (.843) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 99-11 (.899) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is also 64-24 (.724) vs. ranked teams in the building. Indiana has also won 61 of its last 62 non-conference games in Assembly Hall dating back to 1984-85.
NEXT GAME: The Hoosiers host the 25th annual Indiana Classic in Bloomington. IU plays Boise State Friday (Dec. 11) at 6 p.m. That game can be seen on the ESPN Regional Network which includes WTTV Ch. 4 in Indianapolis. It can also be heard on the IU Radio Network.
