Hoosiers defeat pair of regional opponents
Bloomington, IN--Indiana's women's tennis team continued its strong play today, defeating two regional opponents with relative ease. The Hoosiers, now 5-2 overall, notched a 7-2 victory over highly regarded Marquette in the first match of the day and then had to fight off some team sickness for an 8-1 decision over Ball State in the afternoon.
The Hoosiers biggest matches of the day came courtesy of Correne Stout, who has paced the Hoosiers all season long. Stout improved her singles record to 16-1 with a pair of victories at the number one position. In the morning session she defeated 36th ranked Elisa Penalvo 6-0,7-5 and then turned around and defeated a tough Gena Tranquada, 6-4,7-6(7-5), in the afternoon. Stout also combined with Kelly Blanch to defeat the Golden Eagles top doubles team of Penalvo and Ana Fernandez 8-6. That team was ranked 2nd in the region and 18th in the nation heading into the competition.
Freshman Blanch continued her strong play for the Hoosiers, sweeping both of her matches. She defeated Esther Ruiz de Ora, 6-3,7-5, in the morning, and then defeated the Cardinals Darcy Poulos, 6-2,6-2, in the three spot in the afternoon.
"We played a great match against Marquette. That was Correne's best win of the season at number one. No one on our team has ever beaten Penalvo," commented head coach Lin Loring. "Against Ball State we played on guts. We had had half of the team with colds, so we were pretty tired for the 2nd match. We played tough when we had to."
Indiana will take the week to practice before heading to North Carolina to face the TarHeels on Saturday. The Hoosiers will then venture just up Tobacco Road for a Sunday showdown with 2nd ranked Duke.
