GAME #27 FACTS: Illinois (20-8, 12-3 Big Ten) at Indiana (18-8, 9-5 Big Ten). Tuesday (Feb. 24), Assembly Hall (17,357), Bloomington, Ind. Game time is 7:30 p.m. (EST).
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play their final home game of the regular season this evening against Illinois. IU lost at Michigan Sunday which dropped its record to 18-8 overall and 9-5 in the Big Ten. A victory this evening would put the Hoosiers at 11 games above .500 for the second time this season. This game is the third in a stretch of three games in six days for the Hoosiers.
TELEVISION: The Illinois game is being broadcast on ESPN. Dave Barnett and Quinn Buckner call the action.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. The flagship station is WBWB in Bloomington which provides a statewide network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame show begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 718 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 27th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 616-216 (.740). Knight is in his 33rd season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 718-266 (.730). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 334-136 (.711). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 35-17 vs. Illinois overall and 33-17 at Indiana.

THE SERIES: Indiana and Illinois are meeting for the 138th time. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 73-64 after Illinois won this year's earlier game 74-72 in Champaign. Indiana has won three of the last five games but Illinois has won the last two games including last year's game in Bloomington. Indiana is 18-7 all-time against the Illini in Assembly Hall and 44-24 in games played in Bloomington.
INDIANA'S BIG TEN HISTORY: The Indiana Hoosiers are playing their 91st season of Big Ten basketball. Indiana began playing Big Ten basketball in 1905 (IU missed the 1907 and 1908 seasons). The Hoosiers are the winningest team in conference history with a 59.6% winning percentage (742-502). Indiana is second in league history with 19 titles.
LAST GAME: (Michigan 112, Indiana 64) In a game where nothing went right for Indiana and everything did for Michigan, the Wolverines handed the Hoosiers a 48-point loss in Ann Arbor. Michigan shot 62.9% in the first half as they took a 54-25 halftime lead. The Wolverines held the Hoosiers to just 22.6% (7-31) in the first half and a season-low 32.8% for the game. Larry Richardson led the Hoosiers with 13 points while Rob Turner added 12. Five Michigan players reached double figures led by Louis Bullock with 26. Michigan made 15-25 3-pointers and shot an opponents season-high 61.8% in the game. The Wolverines also outrebounded the Hoosiers 45-27 and had 25 assists and just 9 turnovers.
LAST MEETING: (Illinois 74, Indiana 72 ­ Jan. 3 ­ Champaign): Indiana overcame a 22-point second half deficit (63-41) to tie the game at 69 before falling to the Illini 74-72. Illinois led 38-25 at the half after opening the game with an 11-0 run. The Hoosiers 28-6 run to tie the game came over a span of 8:45. Andrae Patterson had a shot to tie the game but it bounced out. The Hoosiers shot 65.4% (17-26) in the second half and 50.9% for the game. William Gladness led the Hoosiers with 19 points while A.J. Guyton (17), Michael Lewis (12) and Rob Turner (11) also scored in double figures. Illinois' Kevin Turner led all scorers with 35.
THINGS HAVE WORKED OUT IN THE PAST: Indiana's 48-point loss to Michigan Sunday was it worst since 1994 when the Hoosiers lost 106-56 at Minnesota. The Hoosiers rebounded from loss to defeated Illinois two days later at home 82-77. Later that season, Indiana advanced to the NCAA East Regional semifinals after defeating Ohio and Temple in the first two rounds.
90 OR MORE SETS THE SCORE: The Hoosiers have scored 90 or more points three times this league season which is the first time this has happened since 1993 when they did so eight times. IU scored 80 or more points five times in conference play last year but have already done so six times this season. Over the years, the more the Hoosiers have scored the more they have won. During Coach Knight's 27 years the Hoosiers are 299-18 when scoring 80 or more points, 138-4 when scoring 90 or more and 44-0 when scoring 100 or more points. Indiana's overall scoring average of 77.8 points per game is its highest since 1993-94 when the Hoosiers averaged 80.9 a contest.
SCORING DOWN OVER LAST THREE GAMES: Indiana has averaged just 70.3 points per game in the last three games after posting an average of 93 per contest in the three previous contests. The most Indiana has scored over the last three games is 74 in the victory at Ohio State. The last three games is Indiana's lowest scoring stretch of the conference season and the first time since games against Western Michigan, Iowa and Illinois that IU has failed to reach 80 points in three consecutive games.
SHOOTING SLIPS: Indiana's season-low 32.8% shooting game at Michigan dropped the team's overall shooting percentage to 49.6% after it spent over two weeks at 50% or better. The last time Indiana shot at least 50% from the field in a season was in 1993 when the Hoosiers shot 52.2%. During Coach Knight's first 26 years in Bloomington, the Hoosiers shot at least 50% 15 times.
BETTER WHEN IT COUNTS: The Hoosiers are the only Big Ten team to be shooting better in conference play than in all games. The Hoosiers lead the league in this category at 50.4% in conference games and 49.6% overall. Indiana is also the only team to be scoring more in conference games (79.0) than overall (77.1).
CONSISTENCY: Why has Indiana's shooting improved so much over last year? The answer probably lies somewhere in the fact that in 18 of the 28 Big Ten halves the team has shot at least 50%. Another reason to look at is the Hoosiers assist-to-made field goal ratio. Indiana has had an assist on 64.2% of its made field goals this season (465 assists on 724 field goals). That is the highest percentage since the 1981-82 season when the Hoosiers had an assist on 64.8 percent of its made field goals. That season the Hoosiers shot 49.2% from the field.
THE A.J. 400: A.J. Guyton has 422 points this season which makes him the first Indiana player to score 400 or more points in his first two years since Calbert Cheaney did so in 1990 and 1991. This accomplishment puts him in an elite group in Indiana history. Besides Cheaney, Steve Alford (1984 and 1985) and Eric Anderson (1989 and 1990) are the only other players among the top 25 scorers in school history score 400 or more points in their first two years. Guyton also needs just 13 rebounds to become just the second player in Indiana history (Isiah Thomas is the other) to register 400 points, 100 assists and 100 rebounds in their first two seasons.
GUYTON CONTINUES 3-POINT RECORD: A.J. Guyton continues to build on his consecutive game 3-point field goal record as he made two at Michigan. The sophomore has now made at least one 3-pointer in each of the last 27 games (26 games this season and the final game of 1997). Jay Edwards held the previous record at 20 which he accomplished in 1989. The sophomore now has 61 3-pointers on the season which is the fourth best total in school history. He doesn't have far to move up the list as Brian Evans' 62 in 1996 is the third best mark in school history. His 140 attempts are the sixth-highest single season mark (his 145 attempts last year ranks fourth all-time).
TEAM MILESTONES ON THE HORIZON: Several areas of play should show up IU records by the end of the season. The Hoosiers need 64 assists and 6 blocks to move into 10th on those all-time single season list. The team has 201 steals already which ties for the ninth-best mark in school history.
INDIANA'S UNBEATEN STREAK CONTINUES: Indiana was the last Division I basketball team to go undefeated in a season as the Hoosiers were 32-0 in 1976. Every other team has lost at least once this season meaning Indiana's streak is safe until next year and now stands at 22 years.
ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: Indiana has guaranteed itself of its 28th consecutive winning season. Every Coach Knight team (27 years) at Indiana has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories this year, the Hoosiers have 25 (out of 27) non-losing conference seasons under Knight.
MORE WINNING: Indiana enters this evening's game 9-5 in the league. The Hoosiers did not win their ninth league game last year until the 17th game of the season and finished with 9 wins in 18 games. Indiana also enters this evening's game winners of 15 of its last 20 games.
PASSING FANCY: Many teams have one true guard who is charge of distributing the basketball. However, the Hoosiers have two in A.J. Guyton and Michael Lewis. Lewis has a career-high 110 assists while Guyton has 100. The two have combined for 52 assists and just 25 turnovers in the last five games.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE WATCH: Indiana players have registered seven double-doubles this season. Michael Lewis had the only one with points and assists with 16 points and 10 assists vs. Minnesota. Andrae Patterson had his third of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds at Wisconsin. First time double-doubles included Luke Recker against Purdue with 27 points and 12 rebounds, Charlie Miller with season-highs of 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. Ohio State and William Gladness with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds vs. Michigan. There could have been at least five more as Patterson has had 9 rebounds three times and 8 another while Gladness had 13 points and 9 rebounds against Temple.
CHART WATCHING: A.J. Guyton is sixth on IU's all-time 3-point attempt list with 285 (Jay Edwards is fifth with 291). Guyton made two 3-pointers at Michigan which gives him 117 career treys (6th all-time, 138 is fifth place). Andrae Patterson has 1,250 career points which is 23rd on the all-time scoring list (Tom VanArsdale is 22nd with 1,252 points).
JUST WONDERING: The last time IU lost to Iowa at home (before the Dec. 31 loss) was Feb. 21, 1991. IU then went on a 50-game home winning streak which lasted from Feb. 24, 1991 to Jan. 24, 1995. The Hoosiers are now 3/25th of the way to accomplishing this again after the last six home victories.
COMEBACK KIDS: Last year IU was 4-9 when trailing at the half but this season they are 5-6. This record includes wins over UAB, South Alabama, USF, Western Michigan and Wisconsin. Indiana also overcame a 22-point second half deficit at Illinois to tie the game.
BALANCED ATTACK: Balance has become a key for the Hoosiers. A.J. Guyton (16.5), Luke Recker (14.6) and Andrae Patterson (12.3) are all scoring in double figures in conference play. William Gladness (9.6) and Michael Lewis (7.6) are not far away from joining this group. These five, plus Rob Turner, have accounted for 81.5% (1,634-2,004) of Indiana's total scoring this season.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers shot a season-low 32.8% at Michigan after shooting 54.8% in the five previous games. That mark was only the second time all season IU has shot less than 40% in a game. Still, Indiana has shot better than 50% in 10 of the last 13 games. The Hoosiers have been a good second half shooting team, bettering 50% in 19 of the last 23 second halves. The Hoosiers' overall shooting percentage stands at 49.6% coming into this evening's game and 50.4% in conference games (both marks lead league). That overall mark is above last season's 43.8% team mark. William Gladness (58.3%), Luke Recker (51.7%) and A.J. Guyton (51.4%) are shooting at least 50% from the field in league play. The Hoosiers have shot 52% (524-1,008) in their victories but just 44.2% (200-453) in the losses. Last season IU shot better than 50% three times but has done so 14 times this year.
CHARITY TOSSES: While the field goal shooting was a season-low at Michigan the Hoosiers did manage to make 73.9% (17-23) from the line. That was the ninth time in the last 10 games the Hoosiers have shot 70% or better from the charity stripe. Indiana has bettered the 90% mark twice this season which includes a conference season-high 91.3% (21-23) performance vs. Purdue(Indiana's season-high is 94.1% ­ 16-17 ­ against Northeast Louisiana and that mark ties for the 10th best in school history). Indiana was one of the top free throw shooting teams in the nation last season finishing second at 76.6%. The Hoosiers come into this evening's game at 73.6% overall and 75.3% in conference play. Michael Lewis is the top player at 75-89 (84.3%). In the victories IU has made 309 free throws while the opponents have attempted 303. In the losses the opponents have 170 attempts while IU has made just 103. The Hoosiers are shooting 74.9% from the line in the victories and 71% in the losses.
THREE-POINTERS: The Hoosiers shot just 31.8% (7-22) at Michigan after a 8-14 game at Ohio State. That 57.1% effort at OSU was the second-highest of the conference season (63.6% vs. Michigan was the highest). The Hoosiers have shot at least 40% in four of the last six games. The Hoosiers are shooting 37.6% on the season and 40.1% in conference play. A.J. Guyton is the top long range shooter at 43.6%. Guyton's 61 treys are a team-high and he, Rob Turner and Luke Recker have combined to make 109 of the Hoosiers 144 3-pointers. IU is shooting 38% in the losses and 37.3% in the victories. Indiana's 144 3-point field goals this season is already the sixth-highest single season total in school history (162 is fifth). The team's 383 attempts is sixth on the all-time list (384 is fifth).
THE BOARD REPORT: The Hoosiers have been outrebounded in three of the last four games. Indiana has been outrebounded by a -12.8 average margin in the five conference losses (+2.0 in league wins). The Hoosiers have won the rebounding battle seven times this conference season (another game was tied). Indiana posted a season-high 31 defensive rebounds at Wisconsin en route to a conference best 40 rebounds. Indiana's overall rebounding margin is -0.1. The Hoosiers have been outrebounded in six of their losses and are at a -6.9 margin in the losses. IU has registered 40+ rebounds six times. The Hoosiers have held an edge in rebounding 14 times.
ASSISTS ANGLE: The Hoosiers had averaged 20 assists over the last five games before registering just 12 at Michigan. IU leads the league in assists and is among the conference leaders in assists to turnovers ratio. IU has accomplished 20+ assists 10 times this year (five times in league play). The season-high is 26 vs. NLU. Taking care of the ball has been a good barometer for Indiana success. Indiana has 349 (19.4) assists in the victories but just 116 (14.5) in the losses. Indiana's assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.13 is its best since 1992-93 when IU posted a 1.37 ratio.
TURNOVER TALE: Indiana's have averaged 14.7 turnovers per game over the last three games which is below its season average of 15.9 per game overall and 16.1 in league play. The Hoosiers have turned the ball over 260 times (14.4 tpg) in the victories while in the losses that number inflates to 153 (19.1 tpg). Indiana has registered 15 games this season in which the assists have outnumbered the turnovers (happened only 5 times last season).
BLOCK PARTY: The Hoosiers have 97 blocks this season but 74 of those have come in the victories. IU has 13 in the last four games which is below its average in league games of 3.5 a contest. Andrae Patterson (29) leads the team.
SCORING SOME POINTS: The Hoosiers enter this evening's game averaging 77.1 points per game overall and 79.0 a game in conference play. The Hoosiers have averaged 81.6 points per game the last six games. The team has also scored 90 or more points three times in league play. Indiana averages 80.4 ppg in the wins but just 69.6 ppg in the losses. Indiana's season-high is 103 vs. Northeast Louisiana in the final game in Hawai'i. The 103 points was the first time the Hoosiers had eclipsed the century mark since Dec. 29, 1995 when they also scored 103 points against Appalachian State (span of 56 games). The Hoosiers scored over 90 points only twice last year in 33 games but have done so five times this year.
MARGIN MATERIAL: The two-point victory at Ohio State was Indiana smallest margin of victory of the season as prior to that each of Indiana's wins this season had been by at least 6 points. The average margin of victory is 13.8 ppg while the loss margin stands at 14.0. Only eight of the Hoosiers' games this season has been decided by less than 10 points ­ at Temple (-6), vs. Kentucky (-3), vs. South Alabama (+8), vs. Western Michigan (+7), at Illinois (-2), vs. Purdue (+6), at Purdue (-5) and at Ohio State (+2).
MAKING THE STEAL: Indiana has averaged just 6.3 steals per game in the last three games . IU's season-high was 16 against SMSU (ties for the fifth-highest mark in school history). IU has 157 (8.7 spg) steals in the victories but just 44 (5.5 spg) in the losses. They have double figures in steals 5 times.
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE: Indiana's last two opponents have shot 57.5% from the field after IU had held its previous two opponents to just 36.6% (48-131) from the field. The Hoosiers have held seven opponents under 40% including Wisconsin and Northwestern to an opponents' season-low 33.3%. The opponents are shooting 44.1% coming into this evening's game. Indiana has held the opponents to 42.3% from the field and forced them into 303 turnovers in the victories which includes an opponents season-high 25 by USF. By contrast in the losses, the opponents are shooting 47.6% and have turned the ball over 110 times.
GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD: This year the Hoosiers are 13-1 while leading at halftime, 5-6 when trailing and 0-1 when tied. The Hoosiers are usually good at holding onto a lead as they are 31-2 in the last 33 games in which they led at the half over the last two seasons.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: Indiana has led the Big Ten in scoring over the last seven years with a average of 79.9 points per gameAs strange as it might sound, no Indiana player has ever recorded a triple-double Indiana is one of the top schools in the country during the 1990's. Entering the season, IU was12th among all teams during this span with a 72.4 winning percentageAll-time in Assembly Hall the Hoosiers are an impressive 329-43 (.884) including a 199-36 (.847) record in Big Ten games. Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 96-10 (.906) in Assembly Hall. Indiana is 63-23 (.733) against ranked teams in Assembly HallIndiana is 10-1 this season where it has scored 80 or more points. Over the last three years, Indiana is 26-6 when scoring at least 80 points.
