Hoosiers topple Tar Heels in Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill, NC--Indiana's women's tennis team improved its record to 6-2 after a hard-fought victory over the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Hoosiers took all three doubles matches en-route to the 5-4 victory.
In singles, senior Correne Stout lost for just the second time this season, falling to Jessica Zaganczyk 7-5,6-3. The lone winners for the Hoosiers were freshmen Kelly Blanch and Ana Ceretto. Blanch, playing at the three position for the 3rd time this year, defeated Sarah Hawkins in straight sets, 6-2,6-2, to up her record to 10-1. Ceretto, who has filled in at the six slot for the past two matches, cruised by Camille King 6-2,6-1 and improved her overall mark to 9-7.
The Hoosiers continued to show their dominance in doubles against Carolina, taking all three positions. Blanch and Stout continued their tear at the top spot, improving to 5-2 in dual match play, as they defeated the UNC number one team of Hawkins and Courtney Zalinski. Jessica Anderson and Christy Sharp teamed up at number two doubles for the fifth time this year and won with relative ease, 8-2. Zahra Ahamed and Ceretto were nearly taken to the wire by the three team, but pulled out an 8-6 victory.
"We played great in the doubles and pulled the match out," said head coach Lin Loring. "We had some very poor performances in the singles that put in postiion to have to sweep the doubles. We had some players who weren't mentally ready to play the singles and that put us in a big hole, but fortunately we played well in doubles and were able to win a close match. That was the first close match we've won all year. We were in a position against Clemson but couldn't pull it out, so it was good to win a close match."
Indiana will be back in action tommorow as they head just up Tobacco Road for a Sunday showdown with 2nd rated Duke. The Blue Devils and Hoosiers are set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
