GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play the first of two games this week at Purdue. IU defeated Penn State 95-76 Wednesday to improve its record to 16-6 overall and 7-3 in the Big Ten. INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 716 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 27th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 614-214 (.741). Knight is in his 33rd season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 716-264 (.731). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 332-134 (.712). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 29-25 vs. Purdue overall and 28-24 at Indiana.
KNIGHT ON THE WEB: Bob Knight has entered cyberspace with his own web site. The site debuted in December. CoachBobKnight.com is a comprehensive look at the coach both on and off the court and the 1997-98 Hoosiers. The site features gameday information, team stats and a text of Coach's postgame press conferences plus many other features. On-line real time stat updates from games are also available.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Purdue are meeting for the 172nd time. The Boilermakers lead the all-time series 100-71 following Indiana's 94-88 victory in Bloomington Jan. 18. That victory by the Hoosiers broke a four-game losing streak to the Boilermakers. Purdue leads the all-time series 64-20 in games played in West Lafayette.
INDIANA'S BIG TEN HISTORY: The Indiana Hoosiers are playing their 91st season of Big Ten basketball. Indiana began playing Big Ten basketball in 1905 (IU missed the 1907 and 1908 seasons). The Hoosiers are the winningest team in conference history with a 59.7% winning percentage (741-500). Indiana is second in league history with 19 titles.
LAST GAME: (Indiana 95, Penn State 76) Indiana used runs of 23-2 in the first half and 23-4 in the second half to pull away from Penn State and win by 19 in Bloomington. The Hoosiers held a 50-36 halftime lead before the Lions cut it to 50-44 early in the second half. From there the Hoosiers went on the 23-4 run and never looked back. Luke Recker led Indiana with a career-high 29 points. Andrae Patterson (15), A.J. Guyton (12), Rob Turner (12) and William Gladness (10) also scored in double figures. Patterson led the team with 8 rebounds. The Hoosiers shot 56.3% including 61.3% in the first half while holding Penn State to 44.4% from the field. The Hoosiers also had 20 assists and made 9 steals.
LAST MEETING: (Indiana 94, Purdue 88 January 18 Bloomington) The Hoosiers used a 22-8 second half run to break a 47-47 tie and then held on for the six-point victory. The Hoosiers took a 16-point second half lead before the Boilers cut it to 4 at 90-86 with 1:27 to play. Down the stretch, William Gladness had a slam dunk and Luke Recker made two free throws to seal the victory. Recker led the team with a then career-high 27 points and 12 rebounds. A.J. Guyton and William Gladness each added 21. Indiana shot 57.6% for the game and made 21 of 23 free throws.
BETTER WHEN IT COUNTS: Indiana has gotten better as the season has progressed and that is evident by looking at the numbers. The Hoosiers are one of only two Big Ten teams (Illinois the other) to be shooting better in conference play than in all games. However, the Hoosiers lead the league in this category at 51% in conference games and 49.7% overall. That 1.3% difference is more than Illinois' 0.9%. Indiana is also the only team to be scoring more in conference games than overall.
CONSISTENCY: Why has Indiana's shooting improved so much over last year? The answer probably lies somewhere in the fact that in 13 of the 20 Big Ten halves the team has shot at least 50%.
90 OR MORE SETS THE SCORE: The Hoosiers have been scoring points at a frantic pace recently. The team has averaged 83.8 points per game over the last five games including posting 90 or more three times. The last time Indiana scored 90 or more points in at least three times in a league season was in 1993 when they did so eight times. Last year IU scored 80 or more points five times in conference play but have already matched that mark this season.
RECKER SETS CAREER-HIGH: Luke Recker scored a career-high 29 points against Penn State. That was the fourth time this season he has scored 20 or more points. Over the last seven games he has averaged 19 points per game. He has also taken over the team lead in conference game scoring at 16.3 per game (he has scored one more point than A.J. Guyton). His 29 points is the most by a freshman in a game since last year when Guyton scored 31 in consecutive games at Michigan and vs. Purdue.
INDIANA'S UNBEATEN STREAK CONTINUES: Indiana was the last Division I basketball team to go undefeated in a season as the Hoosiers were 32-0 in 1976. Every other team has lost at least once this season meaning Indiana's streak is safe until next year and now stands at 22 years.
ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: Indiana has guaranteed itself of its 28th consecutive winning season. Every Coach Knight team (27 years) at Indiana has has a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories last year, the Hoosiers have 24 (out of 26) non-losing conference seasons under Knight. A victory tonight would make that 25 of 27.
MORE WINNING: Indiana enters tonight's game 7-3 in the league. Last year the Hoosiers did not win their seventh league game until the 13th conference game of the season. They did not win their eighth until the 15th game of the league season. Indiana also enters this evening's game winners of 13 of its last 16 games. The last time IU began the league season 7-3 was in 1996 when they finished 12-6.
GUYTON CONTINUES 3-POINT RECORD: A.J. Guyton continues to build on his consecutive game 3-point field goal record as he made two vs. Penn State. The sophomore has now made at least one 3-pointer in each of the last 23 games (22 games this season and the final game of 1997). Jay Edwards held the previous record at 20 which he accomplished in 1989.
PASSING FANCY: Many teams have one true guard who is charge of distributing the basketball. However, the Hoosiers have two in A.J. Guyton and Michael Lewis. Lewis has a career-high tying 95 assists while Guyton has 89. The two have combined for 26 assists to just 8 turnovers in the last two games.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE WATCH: Indiana players have registered six double-doubles this season. Andrae Patterson had his third of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds at Wisconsin. First time double-doubles included Luke Recker against Purdue with career-highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds, Charlie Miller with season-highs of 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. Ohio State and William Gladness with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds vs. Michigan. There could have been at least five more as Patterson has had 9 rebounds three times and 8 another while Gladness had 13 points and 9 rebounds against Temple.
CHART WATCHING: A.J. Guyton is sixth on IU's all-time 3-point attempt list with 263 (Jay Edwards is fifth with 291). Guyton also needs 2 3-pointers to move into seventh on 3-point field goal all-time list and surpass Steve Alford who had 107. Andrae Patterson now has 1,197 career points which is 25h on the all-time scoring list (Steve Downing is 24th at 1,220 points).
JUST WONDERING: The last time IU lost to Iowa at home (before the Dec. 31 loss) was Feb. 21, 1991. IU then went on a 50-game home winning streak which lasted from Feb. 24, 1991 to Jan. 24, 1995. The Hoosiers are now 1/10th of the way to accomplishing this again after the last four home victories.
COMEBACK KIDS: The victory over Wisconsin marked the fifth time this season the Hoosiers have overcome a halftime deficit and won the game. Last year IU was 4-9 when trailing at the half but this season they are 5-4. This record also includes wins over UAB, South Alabama, USF and Western Michigan. Indiana also overcame a 22-point second half deficit at Illinois to tie the game.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have shot 54.6% (65-119) in the last two games including 56.3% against Penn State. Indiana has now shot better than 50% in seven of the last nine games. The Hoosiers have been a good second half shooting team, bettering 50% in 16 of the last 19 second halves. The Hoosiers' overall shooting percentage stands at 49.7% coming into this evening's game and 51% in conference games (both marks lead league). That overall mark is above last season's 43.8% team mark. Three Hoosiers William Gladness (55.2%), Luke Recker (53.4%) and Rob Turner (53%) are shooting at least 50% from the field. The Hoosiers have shot 51.7% (468-905) in their victories but just 44.1% (147-333) in the losses. Last season the Hoosiers shot better than 50% only three times but have done so 11 times this year.
CHARITY TOSSES: The Hoosiers continued their hot shooting from the foul line making 17-21 (81%) against Penn State. Indiana has shot 80% (100-125) in the last five games. This stretch includes a conference season-high 91.3% (21-23) performance vs. Purdue. That percentage was the second time this year IU has passed the 90% mark (Indiana's season-high is 94.1% 16-17 against Northeast Louisiana and that mark ties for the 10th best in school history). Indiana was one of the top free throw shooting teams in the nation last season finishing second at 76.6%. The Hoosiers come into this evening's game at 73.1% overall and one of the league leaders at 74.8% in conference play. Michael Lewis is the top player at 67-79 (84.8%). In the victories IU has made 285 free throws while the opponents have attempted 280. In the losses the opponents have 114 attempts while IU has made just 71. The Hoosiers are shooting 74.2% from the line in the victories but just 68.9% in the losses.
THREE-POINTERS: The Hoosiers have shot at least 40% in five of the last six games, going 36-84 (42.9%) during this stretch. IU was 6-13 vs. Penn State. Indiana is shooting 37% on the season. A.J. Guyton is the top long range shooter at 42.4%. Guyton's 50 treys are a team-high and he, Rob Turner and Luke Recker have combined to make 92 of the Hoosiers 118 3-pointers. IU is shooting 37.9% in the losses and 36.6% in the victories. The Hoosiers are third in the league in 3-point shooting at 39.9% (conference games only).
THE BOARD REPORT: After being outrebounded by a -18 margin at Michigan State, Indiana "rebounded" for a combined +12 margin in the last two games. The Hoosiers have won the rebounding battle six times this conference season (another game was tied). Indiana posted a season-high 31 defensive rebounds at Wisconsin en route to a conference best 40 rebounds. Indiana's rebounding margin is +1.3. The Hoosiers have been outrebounded in four of their losses and are at a -4.7 margin in the losses. IU has registered 40+ rebounds six times. The Hoosiers have held an edge in rebounding 13 times.
ASSISTS ANGLE: The Hoosiers have 45 assists in the last two games which includes a conference season-high 25 vs. Minnesota and 20 vs. Penn State. IU leads the league in assists and assists to turnovers ratio. IU has accomplished 20+ assists 10 times this year (five times in league play). The season-high is 26 vs. NLU. Taking care of the ball has been a good barometer for Indiana success. In the victories they have 292(19.5) assists but just 86 (14.3) in the losses.
TURNOVER TALE: Indiana improved in the turnover category with 14 against Penn State after having 19 or more in three of the previous four games. Indiana averages 15.7 per game overall and in league play. In the victories the Hoosiers have turned the ball over 230 times (14.4 tpg) while in the losses that number inflates to 115 (19.2 tpg). Indiana has registered 14 games this season in which the assists have outnumbered the turnovers (happened only 5 times last season).
BLOCK PARTY: The Hoosiers have 84 blocks this season but 66 of those have come in the victories. IU has 3 in each of the last two games which is the second-lowest total in league play. Andrae Patterson (25) leads the team.
SCORING SOME POINTS: The Hoosiers enter this evening's game averaging 77.5 points per game overall and a Big Ten-leading 80.6 a game in conference play. The Hoosiers scored 95 points in each of the last two games. This was also the third time this conference season they have reached 90 or more points. Indiana averages 81.3 ppg in the wins but just 67.3 ppg in the losses. Indiana's season-high is 103 vs. Northeast Louisiana in the final game in Hawaii. The 103 points was the first time the Hoosiers had eclipsed the century mark since Dec. 29, 1995 when they also scored 103 points against Appalachian State (span of 56 games). The Hoosiers scored over 90 points only twice last year in 33 games but have done so five times this year.
MARGIN MATERIAL: Each of Indiana's wins this season have been by at least 6 points. The average margin of victory is 14.3 ppg while the loss margin stands at 9.9. Only six of the Hoosiers' games this season has been decided by less than 10 points at Temple (-6), vs. Kentucky (-3), vs. South Alabama (+8), vs. Western Michigan (+7), at Illinois (-2) and vs. Purdue (+6).
MAKING THE STEAL: Indiana has averaged 8.3 steals per game in the last three contests. IU's season-high was 16 against SMSU (ties for the fifth-highest mark in school history). IU has 141 (8.8 spg) steals in the victories but just 35 (5.8 spg) in the losses. They have double figures in steals 5 times.
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE: The Hoosiers have held five opponents under 40% including Wisconsin to an opponents' season-low 33.3%. The opponents are shooting 43.6% coming into this evening's game. In the victories, Indiana has held the opponents to 42.2% from the field and forced them into 272 turnovers which includes an opponents season-high 25 by USF. By contrast in the losses, the opponents are shooting 46.8% and have turned the ball over 89 times.
GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD: This year the Hoosiers are 11-1 while leading at halftime, 5-4 when trailing and 0-1 when tied. The Hoosiers are usually good at holding onto a lead as they are 29-2 in the last 31 games in which they led at the half over the last two seasons.
