Hoosiers continue to roll at Winter Invite
Indiana handles ranked Kentucky and Clemson
Bloomington, IN--The Hoosiers continued to play solid tennis on day two of the Indiana Winter Invitational. After suffering several key injuries earlier in the season, the team is finally back to near perfect health and appears ready to compete with the tough competition once again.
After playing the doubles yesterday, Indiana and 11th ranked Clemson finished competition with singles in the morning matches. The Hoosiers got wins out of Gabriel Montilla at the two spot, Andrew Held at three, and a pair of wins out of the freshmen, Paul Jacobson and Joey Balsiger, at five and six respectively.
In the afternoon competition the Hoosiers battled 26th ranked Kentucky in both singles and doubles competition. Andrew Held improved to a perfect 3-0 in the tournament, defeating highly regarded Dan Spaner, 6-1,6-3. Freshman Ian Arons played perhaps the best tennis of his young career, defeating Ariel Gaitan, 6-0,2-6,7-6 at number four singles. The final set came down to an 11-9 tie-break victory in an emotional match for the young Hoosier. Paul Jacobson also improved to 3-0 at number five singles with a 7-5,2-6,7-5 victory over Patrick Johanson.
In doubles, the Hoosiers swept the Wildcats to improve to a perfect 9-0 in doubles competition. Derek Pope and Montilla combined to earn an 8-6 victory at number one, while Arons and Jacobson defeated Kentucky's third team. Scott Lippitt and Held won at number two by virtue of default.
Indiana will conclude the Invitational tommorrow, as the top finishers in each flight square of in divisional finals.
