Hoosiers Wrap-Up Winter Invite
Hoosiers take all six championship matches
Bloomington, IN--Indiana closed out the 1998 Indiana Winter Invitational in much the same manner they began--with more strong efforts against highly regarded competition. The Hoosiers continued to take it to 11th ranked Clemson and 26th ranked Kentucky in the division finals.
In the early singles freshman Ian Arons finished the tournament at 4-1 with a solid 6-1,6-7,6-3 decision over Southern Illinois-Carbondale's Jack Oxler. Andrew Held finished the Invitational with an unblemished 4-0 mark after he knocked off Kentucky Edo Bowano, 6-3,5-7,6-3. Other singles winners for the Hoosiers included Brenden Storey, in straight sets, and Scott Lippitt and Joey Balsiger, also winning in two sets.
In doubles, the Hoosiers again got strong performances, winning all but one match to finish the tournament 12-1. The duo of Derek Pope and Gabriel Montilla again played extremely well, defeating Kentucky's Fluitt and Hesous, 8-6. Lippitt and Held were also 8-6 winners, as was the freshman tandem of Balsiger and Paul Jacobson.
The Hoosiers will begin their singles season on Friday as they host the annual "Dinner with Doubles" competition. Ohio State will come to town for the event that is slated for a 6:00 pm start.
