THIS WEEK: The Hoosiers have one game this week against the Franklin College Grizzlies before they travel to Florida for the Homestead Challenge, March 14-21. The Hoosiers will face Connecticut on Saturday at 7 p.m. and St. Francis and Northern Iowa in a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. Monday (March 16) the Hoosiers face CW Post at 2:30 p.m. and Tuesday (March 17), IU will face New York Tech at 12 p.m. All other games in the tournament will be announced at a later date.
THE OPPONENTS: The Hoosiers have never lost to Franklin, as they hold a 17-0-1 advantage over the Grizzlies. The last meeting between the two teams was in 1988, when the Hoosiers won, 7-3. Indiana is 2-0 against St. Francis, having won the last meeting, 18-6 in 1991. The Hoosiers have never beaten New York Tech, dropping both meetings, including a 15-7 loss last season. IU has never faced Connecticut or Northern Iowa.
LAST WEEK: Indiana's first two games were rained out against Bellarmine and Butler. The Hoosiers defeated IUPUI, 4-2 Thursday behind freshman David Ferris. In his first career start, Ferris pitched five scoreless innings. IU was paced offensively by freshman designated hitter Dan Haegele, who went three for three with four stolen bases. IU swept a double header from Cincinnati on Saturday, winning the opener 5-2 and the second game, 4-0. The Hoosiers got back to back complete games from senior Kyle Boyd and junior Chad Smith. In the first game, the Hoosiers scored five unearned runs in the first inning for all the runs they would need. In the night cap, Smith scattered five hits while striking out a career high eight batters in his second consecutive complete game. IU dropped the series finale to the Bearcats, 8-7 after leading 5-2. The Hoosiers had the tying run on second base with two outs in the ninth innings, but junior Brandt Childs, who had brought IU to within one with a two-run homer in the seventh, struck out to end the game.
LOOKING AHEAD: March will end with seven home games including the first Big Ten series against Penn State, March 27-29. The Hoosiers also play host to Defiance and Taylor, with whom they will play a double header March 31.
HOOSIER NOTES - TEAM
The Hoosiers are outhitting their opponents, .289-.262--The loss to
Cincinnati was the Hoosiers first home loss of the season--the Hoosiers
have allowed eight triples, while hitting just one--Indiana has four
complete games, while opponents have hurled just one--IU is outfielding its
opponents, .960-.949--the Hoosiers have made five fewer errors than their
opponents.
HOOSIER NOTES - INDIVIDUAL
At the Plate: Freshman Dan Haegele leads the Hoosiers with a .455
average--Haegele is also tops on the team with six stolen bases--after
starting the season 12-23 (.522) junior Brandt Childs has gone just 4-20
(.200) over his last six games--sophomore Doug DeVore had his career-high
nine game hitting streak snapped against Cincinnati--sophomore Jason
Karchefsky got his first hit of the season Sunday vs. Cincinnati with a
third-inning double--Jason Williams has a modest four-game hitting streak
for the Hoosiers--junior Sam Incandela has five multi-hit games this
season--senior Roger Rodeheaver leads the Hoosiers with five doubles and 13
walks--junior Frank O'Connell is three for his last nine, raising his
average to .286--O'Connell also leads the Hoosiers with a 1.000 fielding
percentage (38 chances).
On the Mound: LHP David Ferris lowered his E.R.A. to 1.80 with five
shutout innings against IUPUI--RHP Tom Willerer has allowed just one earned
run in 9.1 innings for an 0.96 ERA--Willerer earned the Hoosiers first save
last week with four scoreless innings against IUPUI--the four innings
matched his career high--RHP Chad Smith recorded his first career shutout
Saturday against Cincinnati--the shutout lowered his E.R.A. to 3.96--Smith
leads the Hoosiers with 24 strikeouts and 25 innings pitched--RHP Kyle Boyd
threw back to back complete games Feb. 28 and March 7--he leads the
Hoosiers with three victories and is second among starters with a 2.28
E.R.A.
