Hoosiers fall to Owls in final day of Rice Invitational
Houston, TX--Indiana's men's tennis squad saw its two match winning streak come to a halt today, dropping a close match to the Rice Owls. The Owls, hosting the Hoosiers in the annual Rice Invitational, defeated the Hoosiers 4-3 to drop them to 6-5 on the season.
Gabriel Montilla, who has been a shining star for the Hoosiers all season, defeated yet another opponent, winning 6-3,6-2 at the number two spot. Sophomore George McGill, who has played well since returning from injury, also collected a victory at the number four spot as did freshman Ian Arons at the six hole.
In doubles, the Hoosiers were uncharacteristically swept by the Owls, losing all three matches by two matches or less. The top duo of Derek Pope and Montilla took Shane Stone and Efe Ustundag to the limit before falling 9-8. Both the second team of Scott Lippitt and Andrew Held and the number three tandem of Arons and Brenden Storey lost in hard-fought 8-6 decisions.
The Hoosiers will now head home for a pair of Big Ten matches next weekend. Indiana will try to improve on its perfect 1-0 Big Ten record against Michigan on the 28th before hosting Michigan State on the 29th. Both matches are scheduled to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
