HOOSIERS START OFF OUTDOOR SEASON ON THE RIGHT FOOT
Tempe, Ariz.- The Indiana track & field team kicked off the 1998 outdoor season with the Baldy Castillo Invitational. In a non-scoring contest, several Hoosiers turned in key performances.
"This was a pretty good start to the season," stated IU women's coach Roseann Wilson. "We had a couple of people down with injuries, but turned in several good performances."
Leading the way for the Hoosiers was junior Metaja Bezjak. Bezjak finished first in the javelin throw with a personal record of 50.05m surpassing the provisional standard of 46.50m. Other Hoosiers turning in impressive performances included a second place finish by senior Nathalie Belfort in the high jump (1.72m), Maria Fleischmann's third place finish in the triple jump (11.91m), senior Jennifer Kamtz (48.80m- 2nd) and freshman Jennifer Brown (46.54m- 4th) both turned in excellent performances in the discus in addition to a personal record 4339 points by sophomore Alicia Bundy.
On the men's side senior Ty Yeager continued to showcase his hurdling excellence with a third place finish in the 400m hurdles (:53.33) and a first place finish in the 110m hurdles while surpassing the NCAA provisional standard with a time of :13.91. Sophomore Kurt Krick placed second in the discus (53.36m) along with a fourth place finish in the shot put (17.23m). Junior Tom Chorny finished third in the steeplechase (8:53.7), five seconds off his 1997 All-American time.
The Hoosiers return home next Saturday, April 4th, for the Big Four Meet.
Competition is scheduled to begin at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field
Complex at noon.
