GAME #29 FACTS: Ohio State (8-21, 1-15 Big Ten) vs. Indiana (18-10, 9-7 Big Ten). Thursday (March 5), United Center (20,000), Chicago, Ill. Game time is 7 p.m. (EST)/6 p.m. (CST).
GAME DATA: The Indiana Hoosiers play Ohio State in the first round of the conference postseason tournament. IU comes into the game with a three game losing streak. Indiana finished the regular season 18-10 overall and 9-7 in league play. The winner of the game plays Purdue in Friday's quarterfinals.
TELEVISION: The Ohio State game is being broadcast on ESPN-Plus which includes WTTV Ch. 4 in Indianapolis.
RADIO: Every IU game can be heard on the IU Radio Network. The flagship station is WBWB in Bloomington which provides a statewide network. Don Fischer, Bob Hammel, Joe Smith and Norm Ellenberger call the action. The pregame show begins 40 minutes prior to tipoff.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT is college basketball's winningest active head coach with 718 victories (all games at the Division I level). He is just one of 12 NCAA coaches all-time to have recorded 700 or more victories. He is in his 27th season as the Indiana head coach and has a record of 616-218 (.739). Knight is in his 33rd season as a collegiate head coach and has an overall record of 718-268 (.728). Knight's record in Big Ten play is 334-138 (.708). He has led the Hoosiers to three NCAA titles (1976, 1981 and 1987) and a conference record 11 Big Ten Championships (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1993). He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1991. Knight is 38-15 vs. Ohio State overall and 36-15 at Indiana.
THE SERIES: Indiana and Ohio State are meeting for the 155th time. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 91-63 after winning both games this season 83-66 in Bloomington and 74-72 in Columbus. Indiana has won seven of the last eight meetings. Indiana has won all three games the teams have played at neutral sites.
INDIANA'S BIG TEN HISTORY: The Indiana Hoosiers are playing their 91st season of Big Ten basketball. Indiana began playing Big Ten basketball in 1905 (IU missed the 1907 and 1908 seasons). The Hoosiers are the winningest team in conference history with a 59.6% winning percentage (742-504). Indiana is second in league history with 19 titles.
LAST GAME: (Iowa 84, Indiana 70): Indiana jumped out to a 16-4 lead at the start of the game but the Hawkeyes came back to lead at the half 39 38. Indiana then led 64-61 with 7:20 to play but Iowa responded with a 23-6 run to finish the game and won 84-70. Indiana shot only 45% while Iowa shot 46.7%. A.J. Guyton led the Hoosiers with 18 points while William Gladness added 15, Luke Recker 14 and Michael Lewis 10. The Hoosiers made 6-12 3-pointers in the first half but were able to make only 1-10 in the second half. Iowa also won the battle of the boards 43 35.
THIS YEAR'S MEETINGS: (Indiana 74, Ohio State 72 ­ Feb. 19 ­ Columbus): Luke Recker made a steal with 10 seconds remaining and followed that with a game-winning dunk as the Hoosiers won 74-72. The Hoosiers held a 3-point halftime lead (37-34) and extended that to a 52-44 advantage with 13:29 to play. However, the Buckeyes came back to tie the game at 52. IU regained the lead, leading by as much as 7 with 7:52 to play. OSU came back to take a 1-point lead at 70-69 before Andrae Patterson made a layup and Michael Lewis a free throw to give the Hoosiers the lead at 72 70. Jason Singleton then tied the game at 72 with 1:06 to play. Guyton led the Hoosiers with a season-high 27 points which included a 5-8 performance from 3-point range. Recker finished with 15 points while William Gladness added 13. Patterson led the team with 8 rebounds. Indiana shot 56.9% and made 8-14 3-pointers.
(Indiana 83, Ohio State 66 ­ Jan. 10 ­ Bloomington): Indiana shot 55.4% (31-56) in the game and had five players in double figures as they defeated Ohio State. The Hoosiers led 37-29 at the half and then led by at least 10 throughout most of the second half. Luke Recker led the Hoosiers with 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half. A.J. Guyton added 17 while Charlie Miller had 13, William Gladness 11 and Rob Turner 10 also were in double figures. Miller led the team with 10 rebounds while Recker had a season-high 7 assists.
RECKER EARNS FRESHMAN AWARD: Earlier this week, Luke Recker was named a second team Freshman All-American by Basketball Times.
LEWIS TIES SCHOOL RECORD: Michael Lewis tied a school record with a career-high 15 assists at Iowa. The mark was set previously by Keith Smart in 1987 against Auburn in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. This was the third time this season he has reached double figures in assists. It was also the fourth time he has accomplished this in his career.
SLOW START: Indiana started league play 0-2 this year for the first time since 1988. However, a slow start to conference play in the past has led to successful season. This was the sixth time in Coach Knight's 27 years the Hoosiers have started at least 0-2 in league play (0-2 four times, 0-4 once). Here's a look at those slow starts and the finishes that followed them.

HOOSIERS FEEL AT HOME IN NBA ARENAS: During the '90s the Hoosiers have felt right at home playing in buildings NBA teams call home. IU has played 28 games in NBA arenas since the start of the 1989-90 season and are 25 3 in those games. This season the Hoosiers are 3-0 (1-0 at the Oakland Coliseum and 2-0 at Market Square Arena) in NBA Arenas. The three losses all came in NCAA Tournament games. The Hoosiers are 1-0 all time in the United Center after defeating DePaul in the building last season.
SCORING DOWN OVER LAST FIVE GAMES: Indiana has averaged just 70.6 points per game in the last five games after posting an average of 93 per contest in the three previous contests. The most Indiana has scored over the last four games is 74 in the victory at Ohio State. This five game span is Indiana's second longest stretch of the season where they have failed to reach 80 points in a game (longest is seven during the later portion of the non-conference season and first two games of league play).
90 OR MORE SETS THE SCORE: The Hoosiers have scored 90 or more points three times this league season which is the first time this has happened since 1993 when they did so eight times. IU scored 80 or more points five times in conference play last year but have already done so six times this season. Over the years, the more the Hoosiers have scored the more they have won. During Coach Knight's 27 years the Hoosiers are 299-18 when scoring 80 or more points, 138-4 when scoring 90 or more and 44-0 when scoring 100 or more points. Indiana's overall scoring average of 77.8 points per game is its highest since 1993-94 when the Hoosiers averaged 80.9 a contest.
SHOOTING SLIPS: Indiana has shot just 38.2% (67-175) in the last three games which has dropped the team's overall shooting percentage to 49% after it spent over two weeks at 50% or better. The last time Indiana shot at least 50% from the field in a season was in 1993 when the Hoosiers shot 52.2%. During Coach Knight's first 26 years in Bloomington, the Hoosiers shot at least 50% 15 times.
BETTER WHEN IT COUNTS: The Hoosiers were one of only two Big Ten teams to have shot better in conference play than in all games (Illinois was the other). The Hoosiers led the league in this category at 49.2% in conference games and were second in all games at 49% . Indiana was also only one of two teams to score more in conference games (78.0) than overall (76.6).
HOOSIERS IN THE LEAGUE RANKINGS: Several Hoosiers left their mark on this conference season by making among the leaders in statistical categories. SCORING: A.J. Guyton 8th (17.1) and Luke Recker 18th (13.7); REBOUNDING: William Gladness 11th (5.9); FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE Recker 7th (49.1%) and Guyton 8th (49.0%); ASSISTS: Michael Lewis 2nd (5.3) and Guyton 9th (3.7); FREE THROW PERCENTAGE: Lewis 5th (86.2%); 3-POINT FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE: Guyton 3rd (46.6%); 3-POINT FIELD GOALS MADE: Guyton 3rd (41); BLOCKED SHOTS: Andrae Patterson 10th (1.0); ASSIST TO TURNOVER RATIO: Lewis 2nd (2.2) and DEFENSIVE REBOUNDS: Gladness 10th (4.1).
CONSISTENCY: Why has Indiana's shooting improved so much over last year? The answer probably lies somewhere in the fact that in 18 of the 32 Big Ten halves the team has shot at least 50%. Another reason to look at is the Hoosiers assist-to-made field goal ratio. Indiana has had an assist on 64.2% of its made field goals this season (495 assists on 771 field goals). That is the highest percentage since the 1981-82 season when the Hoosiers had an assist on 64.8 percent of its made field goals. That season the Hoosiers shot 49.2% from the field.
THE A.J. 400: A.J. Guyton has 465 points this season which makes him the first Indiana player to score 400 or more points in his first two years since Calbert Cheaney did so in 1990 and 1991. This accomplishment puts him in an elite group in Indiana history. Besides Cheaney, Steve Alford (1984 and 1985) and Eric Anderson (1989 and 1990) are the only other players among the top 25 scorers in school history score 400 or more points in their first two years. Guyton also needs just 6 rebounds to become just the second player in Indiana history (Isiah Thomas is the other) to register 400 points, 100 assists and 100 rebounds in their first two seasons.
GUYTON CONTINUES 3-POINT RECORD: A.J. Guyton continues to build on his consecutive game 3-point field goal record as he made four at Iowa. The sophomore has now made at least one 3-pointer in each of the last 29 games (28 games this season and the final game of 1997). Jay Edwards held the previous record at 20 which he accomplished in 1989. The sophomore now has 67 3-pointers on the season which is the third best total in school history (Jay Edwards is second with 81). His 154 attempts are the fourth-highest single season mark (Brian Evans' 158 in 1996 is third).
GUYTON ONE OF ALL-TIME LEADING FIRST TWO YEAR SCORERS: A.J. Guyton's 915 career points is the eighth-highest scoring total in Indiana history for a players first two years. Here's a look at the top performers in their first two seasons:

TEAM MILESTONES ON THE HORIZON: Several areas of play should show up in IU records by the end of the season. The Hoosiers need 34 assists and 3 blocks to move into 10th on those all-time single season list. The team has 211 steals already which ties for the seventh-best mark in school history.
INDIANA'S UNBEATEN STREAK CONTINUES: Indiana was the last Division I basketball team to go undefeated in a season as the Hoosiers were 32-0 in 1976. Every other team has lost at least once this season meaning Indiana's streak is safe until next year and now stands at 22 years.
ANOTHER WINNING SEASON: Indiana has guaranteed itself of its 28th consecutive winning season. Every Coach Knight team (27 years) at Indiana has had a winning season. During Knight's tenure in Bloomington, Indiana is the only school in the Big Ten to register an overall winning record each year. Along those same lines with 9 conference victories this year, the Hoosiers have 25 (out of 27) non-losing conference seasons under Knight.
PASSING FANCY: Many teams have one true guard who is charge of distributing the basketball. However, the Hoosiers have two in A.J. Guyton and Michael Lewis. Lewis has a career-high 126 assists while Guyton has 104. The two have combined for 72 assists and just 34 turnovers in the last six games.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE WATCH: Indiana players have registered eight double doubles this season. Michael Lewis has two such performances with 10 points and 15 assists at Iowa and 16 points and 10 assists vs. Minnesota. Andrae Patterson had his third of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds at Wisconsin. First time double-doubles included Luke Recker against Purdue with 27 points and 12 rebounds, Charlie Miller with season-highs of 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. Ohio State and William Gladness with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds vs. Michigan. There could have been at least five more as Patterson has had 9 rebounds three times and 8 another while Gladness had 13 points and 9 rebounds against Temple.
CHART WATCHING: A.J. Guyton is fifth on IU's all-time 3-point attempt list with 299 (Calbert Cheaney is fourth with 338). Guyton made four 3 pointers at Iowa which gives him 123 career treys (6th all-time, 138 is fifth place). Andrae Patterson has 1,267 career points which is 21st on the all-time scoring list (Joby Wright is 20th with 1,272 points).
COMEBACK KIDS: Last year IU was 4-9 when trailing at the half but this season they are 5-8. This record includes wins over UAB, South Alabama, USF, Western Michigan and Wisconsin. Indiana also overcame a 22-point second half deficit at Illinois to tie the game.
BALANCED ATTACK: Balance has become a key for the Hoosiers. A.J. Guyton (17.1), Luke Recker (13.7) and Andrae Patterson (11.8) are all scoring in double figures in conference play. William Gladness (9.9) and Michael Lewis (7.8) are not far away from joining this group. These five, plus Rob Turner, have accounted for 81.8% (1,756-2,146) of Indiana's total scoring this season.
FROM THE FIELD: The Hoosiers have shot only 38.2% (67-175) in the last three games after shooting 54.8% in the five previous games. This three game stretch is Indiana's second longest sub-50% streak of the season (six games is the longest). Still, Indiana has shot better than 50% in 10 of the last 15 games. The Hoosiers have been a good second half shooting team, bettering 50% in 19 of the last 25 second halves. The Hoosiers' overall shooting percentage stands at 49% (leads league) coming into this evening's game and 49.2% in conference games (second in the league). That overall mark is above last season's 43.8% team mark. The Hoosiers have shot 52% (524-1,008) in their victories but just 43.6% (247-567) in the losses. Last season IU shot better than 50% three times but has done so 14 times this year.
CHARITY TOSSES: Indiana's slipped below 70% for only the second time in the last 12 games as they made only 9-14 (64.3%) at Iowa. The Hoosiers shot less than 70% only four times in league play. Indiana has bettered the 90% mark twice this season which includes a conference season-high 91.3% (21-23) performance vs. Purdue (Indiana's season-high is 94.1% ­ 16-17 ­ against Northeast Louisiana and that mark ties for the 10th best in school history). Indiana was one of the top free throw shooting teams in the nation last season finishing second at 76.6%. The Hoosiers come into this evening's game at 73.5% overall and 74.9% in conference play. Michael Lewis is the top player at 80-94 (85.1%). In the victories IU has made 309 free throws while the opponents have attempted 303. In the losses the opponents have 234 attempts while IU has made just 138. The Hoosiers are shooting 74.9% from the line in the victories and 71.5% in the losses.
THREE-POINTERS: The Hoosiers have shot just 32.8% (20-61) from long range in the last three games. IU has also made only 31-86 (36.1%) in the last five games. The 57.1% effort at OSU was the second-highest of the conference season (63.6% vs. Michigan was the highest). Indiana shot better than 40% nine times in conference play but has not do so in the last three games. The Hoosiers are shooting 37.2% on the season and 39% in conference play. A.J. Guyton is the top long range shooter at 43.5%. Guyton's 67 treys are a team-high and he, Rob Turner and Luke Recker have combined to make 117 of the Hoosiers 157 3-pointers. IU is shooting 37% in the losses and 37.3% in the victories. Indiana's 157 3-point field goals this season is already the sixth-highest single season total in school history (162 is fifth). The team's 422 attempts is fourth on the all-time list (464 is third).
THE BOARD REPORT: The Hoosiers have been outrebounded in four of the last six games. Indiana has been outrebounded by a -10.4 average margin in the seven conference losses (+2.0 in league wins). The Hoosiers have won the rebounding battle eight times this conference season (another game was tied). Indiana posted a season-high 31 defensive rebounds at Wisconsin en route to a conference best 40 rebounds. Indiana's overall rebounding margin is -0.2. The Hoosiers have been outrebounded in seven of their losses and are at a -6.0 margin in the losses. IU has registered 40+ rebounds six times. The Hoosiers have held an edge in rebounding 14 times.
ASSISTS ANGLE: The Hoosiers registered 22 assists at Iowa after managing just 20 assists in the two previous games combined. IU led the league in assists with 281 (17.6 per game). IU was also fourth in the conference in assists to turnovers ratio. IU has accomplished 20+ assists 11 times this year (six times in league play). The season-high is 26 vs. NLU. Taking care of the ball has been a good barometer for Indiana success. Indiana has 349 (19.4) assists in the victories but just 146 (14.6) in the losses. Indiana's assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.12 is its best since 1992-93 when IU posted a 1.37 ratio.
TURNOVER TALE: Indiana's have averaged 14.8 turnovers per game over the last five games which is below its season average of 15.8 per game overall and 15.9 in league play. The Hoosiers have turned the ball over 260 times (14.4 tpg) in the victories while in the losses that number inflates to 183 (18.3 tpg). Indiana has registered 16 games this season in which the assists have outnumbered the turnovers (happened only 5 times last season).
BLOCK PARTY: The Hoosiers have 99 blocks this season but 74 of those have come in the victories. IU has just 15 in the last six games which is below its average in league games of 3.2 a contest. Andrae Patterson (29) leads the team.
POINT PRODUCTION: The Hoosiers enter this evening's game averaging 76.6 points per game overall and 78.0 a game in conference play. The team has also scored 90 or more points three times in league play. Indiana averages 80.4 ppg in the wins but just 69.9 ppg in the losses. Indiana's season-high is 103 vs. Northeast Louisiana in the final game in Hawai'i. The 103 points was the first time the Hoosiers had eclipsed the century mark since Dec. 29, 1995 when they also scored 103 points against Appalachian State (span of 56 games). The Hoosiers scored over 90 points only twice last year in 33 games but have done so five times this year.
MARGIN MATERIAL: The two-point victory at Ohio State was Indiana smallest margin of victory of the season as prior to that each of Indiana's wins this season had been by at least 6 points. The average margin of victory is 13.8 ppg while the loss margin stands at 13.5. Only eight of the Hoosiers' games this season has been decided by less than 10 points ­ at Temple (-6), vs. Kentucky (-3), vs. South Alabama (+8), vs. Western Michigan (+7), at Illinois (-2), vs. Purdue (+6), at Purdue (-5) and at Ohio State (+2).
MAKING THE STEAL: Indiana has averaged just 5.0 steals per game in the last four games . IU's season-high was 16 against SMSU (ties for the fifth-highest mark in school history). IU has 157 (8.7 spg) steals in the victories but just 54 (5.4 spg) in the losses. They have double figures in steals 5 times.
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE: Indiana's last four opponents have shot 53.3% (126-236) from the field after IU had held its previous two opponents to just 36.6% (48-131) from the field. The Hoosiers have held seven opponents under 40% including Wisconsin and Northwestern to an opponents' season-low 33.3%. The opponents are shooting 44.4% coming into this evening's game. Indiana has held the opponents to 42.3% from the field and forced them into 303 turnovers in the victories which includes an opponents season-high 25 by USF. By contrast in the losses, the opponents are shooting 47.8% and have turned the ball over 140 times.
GET AHEAD, STAY AHEAD: This year the Hoosiers are 13-1 while leading at halftime, 5-8 when trailing and 0-1 when tied. The Hoosiers are usually good at holding onto a lead as they are 31-2 in the last 33 games in which they led at the half over the last two seasons.

Since the beginning of the 1990-91 season the Hoosiers are 96-11 (.897) in Assembly Hall. Over the last three years, Indiana is 26-6 when scoring at least 80 points.
