HOOSIERS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER FROM CINCINNATI
Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana baseball team got back to back complete games from Kyle Boyd and Chad Smith, sweeping a doubleheader, 5-2 and 4-0 over Cincinnati Saturday.
Nearly all of the scoring in the first game came in the first inning, as the Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the top half of the first. IU then scored five unearned runs on three errors in the bottom of the first to surge ahead, 5-1.
Boyd pitched masterfully over the next five innings, allowing just four hits before giving up a run in the seventh inning. The complete game was Boyd's second consecutive, following a nine inning complete game last weekend against Ball State. Boyd (3-0) struck out six batters in seven innings of work.
Sophomore Doug DeVore led off the third inning with a double, giving him at least one hit in all nine games he has played in. The nine-game hitting streak is a career high for the outfielder. Senior Mike Spisak and Frank O'Connell each had their career-best hitting streaks snapped in the first game of the double header.
In the second game, Chad Smith (2-1) scattered five hits over seven innings while recording his first shutout of the season. The junior struck out a career high eight batters, while recording his second consecutive complete game.
Junior Sam Incandela led the Hoosiers offensively, going two for four with a run scored and an RBI. The second baseman has five multi-hit games this season, after entering the year with just seven career hits.
The victories improve the Hoosiers to 8-5, while the Bearcats fall to
2-12. The two teams will square off again tomorrow, with the first pitch
at Sembower Field scheduled for 1 p.m.
