Hoosiers drop Big Ten opener
Bloomington, IN--Indiana's women's tennis team, battling several key injuries, dropped a close match today. In the Hoosiers first Big Ten match of the season the Minnesota Golden Gophers slipped by Indiana, 4-3. The loss dropped the Hoosiers to 6-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
Indiana continued to get strong play from senior Correne Stout at the number one singles position. She defeated Nora Sauska, 6-4,7-6(8-6) to up her mark to 18-3 on the season. Sophomore Zahra Ahamed also continued her strong play, defeating Kim Simonson 7-5,6-3 at the three position. The only other singles win for the Hoosiers came from sophomore Jessica Anderson who won a 6-4,6-4 decision over Helen Wang.
After losing the number one doubles match 8-4, Ahamed and junior Kelly Fitzgeraldwon at number two, 8-5. Minnesota clinched the match by taking a hard-fought 9-7 decision from Anderson and freshman Ana Ceretto to earn the lone doubles point.
"It was an exciting college tennis match," said head tennis coach Lin Loring. "We're disappointed with the loss because we put ourselves in a position to win. It came down to the doubles point and we were forced to play two teams who had never played together because of injuries. We did just about as good as we could of in that situation."
The Hoosiers will attempt to get back on track tommorow as the face conference opponent Iowa at 10:00 a.m.
