HOOSIERS SHINE AT BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Evanston, Ill.- The 16th ranked Indiana women's water polo team
dominated its first four matches of the Big Ten Championships. The Hoosiers
kicked off the tournament on Friday, April 10th, with a 16-1 victory over
Illinois. IU did not miss a step in day two of the Big Ten Championships
defeating Northwestern 6-1, Michigan State 9-1, and Wisconsin 14-1 on Saturday,
April 11th. The Hoosiers improved to 20-4-1 on the season.
"We really came together today," stated IU assistant coach Jack Wagner. "Regardless of who we played, we played as a team."
Leading the way for the Hoosiers against Illinois was freshman Sara Wiechers with four goals. Freshmen Kelly McKay, Meredith Cravens, and Sheri Fagley also contributed two goals a piece.
Cravens continued to be an offensive force as she led the Hoosiers with three goals against Northwestern. Sophomore Deb Simone added four assists while senior goalie Kate Toole had 15 saves.
Simone took over against Michigan State with three goals and seven steals. Senior Maryann Lekas added a goal, two assists and five steals. Toole was solid at the goal with ten blocks.
Simone and freshman Kristin Carpenter fueled the Hoosier attack in the final game with three goals a piece. Freshman Emily Schmit added a goal and two steals.
Indiana is scheduled to play the championship game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
against Big Ten rival Michigan.
