Hoosiers and Spartans Split Doubleheader
East Lansing, Mich. -- Chad Smith pitched a complete game shutout to lead the Hoosiers to a 2-0 victory over Michigan State and highly-touted pitcher Mark Mulder in the first of two Saturday.
Michigan State came back to win the second game 2-0, spoiling a five-hit
performance by IU's Jason Torres.
Benji Clause led off the first game with a single to right and scored on
a Brandt Childs single. Doug DeVore then drove in Childs and that was all
the run support Smith needed as he allowed only four hits and struckout
five.
Michigan State grabbed an early lead in the second game and the Hoosiers
wasted a bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the seventh as the teams
split the doubleheader.
