INDIANA OUSTS HIGHLY TOUTED BADGERS
MADISON, Wisc. - The Indiana women's tennis team had two tough hurdles to battle in their trip to Wisconsin. The first was regrouping from a tough defeat at home versus Kentucky in time to battle the 19th-ranked Badgers. The second was at number one singles where Wisconsin's Barbara Urbanska came in with a 17-11 record. The Hoosiers managed to overcome both in a hard fought 4-3 victory.
At number one singles, Correne Stout overcame losing the first set in her 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 victory over Urbanska. The victory was expecially difficult after Stout had sprained her ankle after going down 4-2 in the deciding set. Stout's victory was the deciding point in the Hoosiers' triumph. She upped her singles record to 21-7 overall, 10-7 in duals, and 4-2 in the Big Ten.
Wisconsin managed to roll off three victories at number two, three and four singles. However, Zahra Ahamed at number three managed to take Wisconsin's Tracy Zobrist to a third set. The Hoosiers evened the score at number five and six singles with victories by Jessica Anderson and Christy Sharp, respectively. Anderson raised her record to 22-10 overall, 12-3 in duals, and 6-0 in the Big Ten. Sharp's record jumped to 15-8 overall, 6-3 in duals, and 1-0 in the conference.
Blanch and Stout fell at number one doubles 8-5 to Urbanska and Marjon Copier. However, the Hoosiers would not be denied the doubles point as Megan McCarney and Zahra Ahamed rolled at number two doubles 8-2, and Christy Sharp and Kelly Fitzgerald squeaked out a 8-6 victory at number three doubles.
Indiana is now 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers will
face Northwestern on Sunday in Evanston, Illinois.
Coach Lin Loring on the victory:
"After losing matches this season 4-3, it was nice to get one in our
favor. The match was tied 3-3 when Correne played against Urbanska. With
a sprained ankle and down 4-2 in the last set, she played on pure guts to
end up winning 6-4."
