INDIANA TO HOST MIDWEST REGIONAL
What's Happening: The Indiana women's water polo team returns for its
second and final home meet of the 1998 season. The Hoosiers will host the
Midwest Regional beginning on Friday, April 17, through Sunday, April 19.
There will be eleven teams competing this weekend with the top two teams
heading to the University of Southern California for the National Championships.
The National Championships is set to be held on May 8-10. The 12th ranked
Michigan Wolverines return as the defending champion and #1 seed. The rest
of the teams rounding out this season's field include: Bowling Green, Florida,
Miami of Ohio, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Ohio, Ohio State,
and Wisconsin. The 16th ranked Hoosiers will be the #2 seed with the #18th
ranked Florida Gators as the third seed.
Big Ten Championship review: The Hoosiers traveled to Northwestern for the Big Ten Championships. IU powered past Illinois 16-1, Northwestern 6-1, Michigan State 9-1, and Wisconsin 14-1 before falling to Michigan 6-3 in the championship game. After a 4-1 weekend, the Hoosiers improved to 20-5-1 on the season.
Indiana head coach Berry King: Coach King is the head coach for
the inaugural season of the Indiana women's varsity water polo team. King
was the coach of the women's club team for the past three years prior to
the team gaining varsity status. As the head coach of the club team, King
compiled a 50-46 record which included a second place finish at last year's
Big Ten Championship and Midwest Regional in addition to a 12th place national
ranking. This year's team has compiled a 20-5-1 record under Coach King
and is currently ranked 16th by the US Water Polo Coach's Poll. King is
assisted by the head coach of the men's club team Jack Wagner.
