HOOSIERS TAKE TWO, MOVE INTO SEMI-FINAL
IU to face Miami of Ohio in must win game
Bloomington, Ind.- The Indiana women's water polo team dominated the second day of the Midwest Regional defeating Northwestern 8-0 in their first game and Michigan State 13-2 in their afternoon game. With these two wins, the Hoosiers moved to 24-5-1 on the season and earned a place in the semi-finals against Miami of Ohio.
Against Northwestern, the Hoosiers received two goals a piece from freshman Sheri Fagley, sophomore Deb Simone, and graduate student Amy Pankoke. Senior Maryann Lekas added five steals as senior goalie Kate Toole had eight saves and her first shutout of the Midwest Regional.
The Hoosiers wasted no time in their second game of the day as they jumped on Michigan State scoring their first goal of the game just 17 seconds into the first period. The Hoosiers would continue to pound Michigan State building a 9-0 lead at the end of three periods. Freshman Kelly McKay led the Hoosiers with three goals and two assists. Freshman Kristin Carpenter and Pankoke added two goals a piece toward the Hoosiers' scoring attack. Sophomores Megan Morgan and Kara Fellerhoff, in addition to Fagley and Simone each had three steals on the defensive end.
The Hoosiers find themselves in their first must win game of the season.
Indiana faces Miami of Ohio at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, the final day of the
Midwest Regional. The winner is guaranteed a spot at the National Championships
to be held at USC on May 8-10. The winner of this game plays in the Midwest
Regional Championships at 2:30 against the winner of the Michigan/Michigan
State game.
