BOILERS PROVE TOO MUCH TO HANDLE FOR HOOSIERS
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team had Purdue against the wall for much of the match today, but just couldn't pull the trigger and close them out. The Hoosiers fell to the Boilers 5-2, dropping their overall record to 11 9 and their conference mark to 5-4.
Indiana's lone victory at singles came from No. 4 Megan McCarney, who defeated Shannon Taheny 6-4, 7-5. McCarney is now 11-16 overall and 4-4 in the Big Ten.
Indiana took the doubles point with a pair of victories by the teams of Zahra Ahamed and Megan McCarney at No. 2 and Kelly Fitzgerald and Christy Sharp at No. 3.
Indiana will next travel to Notre Dame on April 21st and Penn State, April 25th, before heading to the Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wis., April 30-May 3.
Coach Lin Loring on the match:
"Give Purdue credit, they were on a mission. We were 37-0 over the last 20 years and they wanted a win. Even after we stole the doubles point (they had five match points), we couldn't beat their spirit. We led in all six singles and couldn't close them out. Purdue was the better team today."
