WOMEN GOLFERS MOVE ONTO BIG TEN TOURAMENT
Tournament Data: The Indiana women's golf team will take part in the 1998 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships, May 1-3, at Penn State. The championship will be held over Penn State's Blue Course, a par-72 that stretches 5,928 yards. Stroke play consists of 72 holes with 36 on Friday, 18 on Saturday, and 18 on Sunday.
The Season at a Glance: The Hoosiers have been strong all season long, having never finished out of the top two in consecutive tournaments. The squad posted an impressive six titles - Spartan Fall Invitational, Wolverine Invitational, Beacon Woods, River Wilderness, Indiana Invitational, and Hawkeye Invitational. In 29 rounds of play, IU carded a 304.5 team stroke average.
Championship History: The Hoosiers have been crowned Big Ten champions six times in the program's history - 1986, 1987, 1990, 1992, 1995, and 1996.. IU has never finished worse than seventh and has placed in the top three 17 times, including the last 15 years in a row.
The Players: Indiana will be represented at the Championships by seniors Erin Carney and Jenny Gray, juniors Michelle Hatfield and Jennifer Seger, sophomore Sami Montgomery, and freshman Inga Snyder. Hatfield was IU's best finisher at last year's championship, where she was second with a four-round total of 316. The squad's six entrants have combined for three individual titles, six second-place finishes, and 16 top five performances.
A Coaching Legend: Indiana head coach Sam Carmichael will be attempting to win his seventh Big Ten title. The six-time women's Big Ten Coach of the Year will be looking to secure his eighth automatic NCAA tournament berth. With the Hoosiers' successful 1998 campaign, Carmichael is once again the front-runner for conference coach of the year.
A Look Ahead: Following the Big Ten Championships, the Hoosiers
will travel to Durham, N.C., for the NCAA Women's Golf East Regional, May
7-9. They will be joined by 18 other teams, including conference foes Ohio
State, Purdue, and Minnesota. The top 19 teams in the nation that qualify
from regional competition will be invited to the NCAA Championships, May
20-23, in Madison, Wis.
