FOOTBALL HOLDS FIRST FULL-LENGTH SCRIMMAGE OF SPRING
Bloomington, Ind. -- The Indiana football team held its first full-length scrimmage of the spring today before approximately 225 fans on the practice fields adjacent to Memorial Stadium. The scrimmage consisted of approximately 100 plays.
Defensive back Curtis Randle El (hamstring), WR O.J. Conner (groin), QB Earl Haniford (concussion; has been held out by team doctor until the middle of next week), DB Justin Smith (hernia) and DT Damian Gregory (wrist) did not play in the scrimmage because of injury. Defensive back Pat Shaw missed the scrimmage because of a death in the family and linebacker Robert Parrish was taking a graduate school entrance exam. Wide receiver Versie Gaddis (finger dislocation) was injured during the scrimmage.
Cam Cameron quotes following the scrimmage: On the scrimmage in general: "The two things that we wanted to come out of the scrimmage were communication on defense and ball security on offense. I just told the team I thought that we did a pretty good job in both areas for the most part. Now we are going to look at the tape and look at each guy individually."
On sophomore running back Marcus Floyd: "He looked like he did some really good things. Again, it's hard to see as much as you'd like standing down on the field but the one run for the touchdown that was called back, a couple of the completions, and some of his runs in the option game looked pretty good. We'll have to look at it on film but I would think that that was one plus that definitely came out of the scrimmage. I don't think it's any surprise that the guy who has been the biggest surprise this spring is the guy that won the Hoosier Strength competition that we had this winter."
On the offensive line: "It looked like they did some good things. It becomes difficult, in the mud, to rush the passer so I think that helped a little bit. The guys up front, for the most part have really improved. I think some of the things they did this winter in conditioning, some of the strength stuff and martial arts, has really helped a lot of these young guys. They've been a pleasant surprise, too, but again, they have a long way to go."
On freshman quarterback Antwaan Randle El: "That one little kid can pull something out that you've never seen before. Antwaan will come up with a new one every day."
On sophomore wide receiver Versie Gaddis: "He can be a solid player. We
only got to see him for about 10 plays last spring (suffered knee injury
during first practice) and we haven't seen him since. We learn more about
him every day and he looks like he's got enough speed and his hands are
getting better. Here's a guy that has three years of eligibility left so
there's a lot of room for improvement."
