IU WATER POLO TRAVELS TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
What's Happening: The Hoosiers travel to Los Angeles for the National Championships. IU enters the three-day twelve team tournament as the #11 seed. The field is broken down into four brackets of three teams. Indiana is in the same bracket with #3 California-Berkeley and #6 U.S.C. The Hoosiers will play two games on Friday, May 8th. Their first game will be at 9:00 a.m. vs. Cal.-Berkeley and againat 1:40 p.m. vs. U.S.C. Due to graduation ceremonies at U.S.C., the Hoosiers first round games will be played at Long Beach State.
The best team in each bracket will move on to contend for spots 1-4, the second place team for spots 5-8, and the third place team for spots 9-12. Other teams playing in the National Championships include two-time defending champ U.C.L.A. (1), Stanford (2), Hawai`i (4), San Diego St. (5), UMass (7), UC Santa Barbara (8), Maryland (9), Michigan (10), and Princeton (12).
Season in Review: The Hoosiers advanced to the National Championships by winning their first ever Midwest Regional title. Indiana defeated Wisconsin 14-3, Northwestern 8-0, and Michigan State 13-2 before advancing to the semi-final in which they Miami of Ohio 14-2. In the championship game, the Hoosiers defeated Michigan for the first time in school history 5-4. Indiana finished the regular season with a 26-5-1 record.
Hoosiers to watch: Sophomore Deb Simone continues to be the Hoosiers key offensive force with a team leading 48 goals (1.5 pg) and 39 assists (1.3 pg). Simone is second in steals to sophomore Kara Fellerhoff. Fellerhoff has swipped 88 steals (2.8) on the season while Simone is a close second with 87 (2.8 pg).
All-tournament team: Simone led the Hoosiers to its first Midwest Regional title and in the process was named the tournament's MVP and a member of the first team all-tournament. Senior goalie Kate Toole joined Simone on the first team while freshman Meredith Cravens was named to the second team all-tournament.
Coach King: Indiana head coach Barry King is wrapping
up his first season as the head coach of the Indiana women's varsity water
polo team. In his first year as head coach, King has led the Hoosiers to
a second place finish at the Big Ten Championships and their first ever
Midwest Regional Championship. Prior to this, King was the head coach of
the Indiana women's water polo club. As their head coach, King compiled
a 46-34 record (.575) while leading the team to a 12th place national ranking
at the conclusion of the 1997 season.
