HOOSIERS DROP TWO AT NATIONALS
Long Beach, Calif.- The Indiana women's water polo team dropped their first two games of the 1998 National Championships at Long Beach State. IU fell to No. 3 California 7-0 and to No. 6 U.S.C. 5-0. The Hoosiers record for the 1998 season now stands at 26-7-1.
Senior goalie Kate Toole highlighted the Hoosiers first game of the tournament vs. California. Toole had a personal best and new team record 19 saves against a dominating California offensive attack. Toole's previous high was 17 saves which she posted in the Princeton Invitational vs. Slippery Rock (3-2-98). Sophomore Kara Fellerhoff led the Hoosiers with two steals.
In their second game of the day, the Hoosiers looked for a big game against No. 6 U.S.C. Indiana set out to avenge a 9-4 loss which they suffered at the hands of U.S.C. at the Claremont Invitational (3-21-98). Sophomores Deb Simone and Fellerhoff each grabbed three steals for the Hoosiers. With her combined five steals in two games, Fellerhoff now stands at a team leading 93 for the season (2.7 pg).
The Hoosiers resume play tomorrow in a rematch of the Midwest Regional Championship game vs. Big Ten foe Michigan. The Hoosiers are 1-2-1 against the Wolverines winning their last meeting 5-4. Indiana will now fight for a possible ninth place finish. The Hoosiers will take on the Wolverines at 12:00 p.m. P.S.T. The winner of this game will play on Sunday, May 10, at 9:00 a.m. for ninth place. The eleventh place game will be played on Saturday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m.
