HOOSIERS FINISH 12TH AT NATIONALS
Hoosiers fall to #10 Michigan 4-2 & #12 Princeton 5-4
Los Angeles, Calif.- The Indiana women's water polo team closed out the 1998 season with a 12th place finish at the National Championships and a 26-9-1 season mark. The Hoosiers fell to Michigan 4-2 and dropped a close one to Princeton 5-4.
The Hoosiers first game of the day would be a rematch of the Midwest Regional Championship as they took on the Michigan Wolverines. Indiana recorded their first win of the season against the Wolverines by a count of 5-4 at the Midwest Regional, but held a 1-2-1 season mark entering today's contest.
It initially appeared that Michigan would run away with the game scoring their first goal after just 1:47 had expired in the first period and their second with 3:18 remaining in the first.
Sophomore Deb Simone would break the Hoosiers out of their offensive funk scoring her first goal of the game with just 32 seconds remaining in the first period. The Wolverines would add another in the second and their fourth and final goal in the third. Simone scored her second goal of the game and 50th of the season with 3:17 remaining in the third. This was not enough as the Hoosiers fell to the Wolverines 4-2.
Senior goalie Kate Toole had nine saves while sophomores Kara Fellerhoff and Simone added three steals a piece.
In their second game of the day and final of the season, the Hoosiers hoped to gain the upper hand in their season series vs. Princeton. Indiana had a 1-1 mark against the Wildcats winning their first meeting 11-5 (2-28-98) at the Princeton Invitational while falling 5-4 at the Claremont Invitational (3-22-98).
The Hoosiers found themselves down 2-1 after first period. Princeton continued to put it to Indiana scoring another two goals to take a 4-1 lead after the first half of play, but the Hoosiers would come storming back. Sophomore Megan Morgan scored her second goal of the game to close the gap to 4-2. Fellerhoff added another goal as did graduate student Amy Pankoke.
The Hoosiers were down 5-4 in the fourth period with little time remaining. A controversial call by one of the officials resulted in a goal being taken off the board and the Hoosiers dropping a close one 5-4.
Megan Morgan was huge for the Hoosiers scoring two goals, dishing out
an assist and swiping three steals. Fellerhoff had three steals in addition
to her goal. Freshman Sheri Fagley, Kristin Carpenter and
Simone added one assist a piece for the Hoosiers.
