ELAINA ODEN NAMED ASSISTANT COACH
Bloomington, Ind. - Indiana University head volleyball coach Katie Weismiller
announced today that former U.S. National Team player Elaina Oden has joined
her staff as an assistant coach.
"Elaina brings a level of experience to us where she's been in every
situation on the court as a player," Weismiller said. "She's had
experience coaching. We've got the players, the team, and now we have someone
coming in with this experience to help us get more wins."
Oden played at the University of the Pacific where she was a three time
All-American. She represented the United States in 15 major international
competitions including the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, the World Grand Prix
and the Goodwill Games. She has also played professionally in the Italian
Club League.
She spent last year as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. She has also coached
at the club level and boys varsity high school level.
"I feel like I have something to give to young players," Oden
said. "I wanted to be in the Big Ten and the opportunity presented
itself at Indiana to do just that. I know IU was in and out of the top 25
last year. I think they are a pretty good team already. "
Weismiller hopes Oden will bring a fresh prospective to her team which finished
18-15 last season.
"It will be something new, something fresh, someone coming in who really
believes in them and will tell them that," she said. "When you've
played at the level she's been at, the players will have respect for her
when she says she believes they can do something."
