Bloomington, Ind. -- Indiana head coach Bob Knight has announced the hiring of former Hoosier guard Pat Knight as an assistant coach on his staff.
Knight replaces Craig Hartman who resigned to pursue other opportunities.
"I am excited about returning to Indiana to coach," Pat Knight said. "Indiana has a long tradition of success, some of which I was a part of as a player. I really enjoyed my time here as a player. I am looking forward to being able to come back as a coach. It was a great opportunity to have played at Indiana and now I feel exactly the same with the chance to coach there."
Knight played at Indiana from 1991-95. He played a career-high 424 minutes as a senior in 1995 and scored a career-high 45 points in 31 games. Knight had a career best 60 assists as a senior and registered 137 in his career. He redshirted in 1992.
During his time at Indiana, the team made five NCAA appearances and played in the 1992 Final Four. The team also won Big Ten titles in 1991 and 1993.
After his playing career, Knight joined the staff of the NBA's Phoenix Suns where he served as an administrative assistant and scout. In 1997, Knight was an assistant coach of the CBA's Connecticut Pride under current IU assistant John Treloar.
Knight became a head coach for the first time last season with the Wisconsin Blast of the International Basketball Association. After a 3-5 start, Knight led his team to a 16-10 record over the last 26 games for a 19-15 final record which was the fourth best mark in the league.
"Anytime that we have a player or a coach coming to Indiana that I feel will make a great contribution to Indiana basketball, I'm really pleased and excited," Bob Knight said. "And I feel that way about what Pat's contributions can be as a coach."
Pat is not the first son to work for his father as an assistant coach
at Indiana in recent years. Doug Mallory worked for his father, Bill, on
the IU football staff from 1994-96. In situations such as this, performance
and salary reviews will be subject to the final decision of the athletic
director.
