GUYTON NAMED TO U.S. GOODWILL GAMES TEAM
Chicago, Ill. -- Indiana junior guard A.J. Guyton was named to USA Basketball's 1998 Good will Games team earlier today it was announced by the organization's Men's Collegiate Committee.
"A.J. did not shoot the ball well at the start of training camp but he really picked up his game and is playing with a lot more confidence," said the team's head coach Clem Haskins. "We're really going to need him as one our outside threats."
Also named to the 1998 USA Basketball Goodwill Games Team were Andre Miller (Utah/Los Angeles, Calif.), Khalid El-Amin (Connecticut / Minneapolis, Minn.),Calvin Booth (Penn State / Reynoldsburg, Ohio), Elton Brand (Duke / Peekskill, N.Y.), Brian Cardinal (Purdue / Tolono, Ill.), Keith Carter (Mississippi / Perryville, Ark.), El-Amin, Dion Glover (Georgia Tech / Decatur, Ga.), Jumaine Jones (Georgia / Camilla, Ga.), Quincy Lewis (Minnesota / Little Rock, Ark.), Miller, James Posey (Xavier / Twinsburg, Ohio), and Wally Szczerbiak (Miami, Ohio / Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.).
"We're going to compete extremely hard. Our athletic ability will speak for itself, and we'll have to utilize it to its advantage," said Haskins. "This team has the heart, the confidence and the determination that it will take to succeed at the Goodwill Games in New York."
The 1998 USA Basketball Goodwill Games Team travels today from its training in Chicago, Ill., to New York, N.Y. for the 1998 Goodwill Games. The USA will open preliminary round play at the Goodwill Games against defending gold medalist Puerto Rico at 2:05 p.m. (EDT) Sunday, July 19 at Madison Square Garden. That contest will be televised live nationally on CBS.
Plans in New York call for the team to practice Thursday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. (EDT), Friday from 11 p.m.-1 p.m. (EDT) and 7 p.m.-9 p.m. (EDT), and Saturday from 1-3 p.m. (EDT). All practices will be held at the New Jersey Nets practice facility, and the last hour of each practice will be open to the media.
Four of the finalists have previous USA Basketball experience. Cardinal and Miller were members of the 1997 USA Basketball Men's 22 & Under World Championship Team, while Brand and Glover both competed on the 1997 USA Basketball Men's Junior National Select Team, which defeated an International Select Team 97-90 in the 1997 Nike Hoop Summit.
The list of finalists includes four players (Booth, Cardinal, Guyton, and Lewis) from the Big Ten Conference; two players (Brand, Glover) from the Atlantic Coast Conference; two players (Carter, Jones) from the Southeastern Conference; and one player (Posey) from the Atlantic 10 Conference, one player (El-Amin) from the Big East Conference, one player (Szczerbiak) from the Mid-American Conference, and one player (Miller) from the Western Athletic Conference.
Haskins will serve as head coach of the 1998 USA Basketball Goodwill Games Team. Assisting Haskins will be Eastern Michigan University head coach Milton Barnes and St. Joseph's University (Pa.) head coach Phil Martelli.
After tipping off preliminary round play on Sunday, the U.S. squad will then oppose China at 9 p.m. (EDT) on Monday, July 20 before wrapping up preliminary round play against Brazil at 9 p.m. (EDT) on Tuesday, July 21. The 1998 Goodwill Games semifinals will be held Thursday, July 23, and the medal round games will be played Friday, July 24. Six of the teams competing in the 1998 Goodwill Games -- Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Lithuania, Puerto Rico and Russia -- will continue on to the 1998 FIBA Men's World Championship in Athens, Greece.
In three previous Goodwill Games appearances, the USA has three medals, including one gold medal (1986), one silver (1990) and one bronze (1994), and a 15-5 (.750) overall record. Previous U.S. players have included Kenny Anderson (1990), Tim Duncan (1994), Sean Elliott (1986), Alonzo Mourning (1990), David Robinson (1986), and Damon Stoudamire (1994).
