WILLIAM GLADNESS NAMED TO BIG TEN ALL-STAR TEAM
Park Ridge, IL -- The Big Ten announced the 1998 men's basketball foreign tour team roster that will travel to Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany in August. Michigan's head coach, Brian Ellerbe, will direct the ninth annual all-star team.
This year's squad features student-athletes representing each of the 11 Big Ten universities, including two participants from Michigan. Illinois' Cory Bradford and A.J. Granger of Michigan State were members of the
Conference's co-champion teams. Granger, a Spartan forward, appeared in all thirty games this year and averaged 12.0 minutes per game. Michigan, the Big Ten's inaugural Conference tournament winner, is represented by Josh Asselin and Brandon Smith. The two Wolverines saw action in all but three games in the 1997-98 season and combined for 5.9 points and four rebounds per game.
Dusty Rychart was a member of the 1998 postseason NIT title winner Minnesota team. The Golden Gophers downed league competitor Penn State, represented on the select team by Joe Crispin, by seven points (79-72) in the championship game. Crispin played in every contest this season and was the fourth leading scorer for the Nittany Lions with 9.6 points a game, averaging 28 minutes and 3.3 assists.
Other notable team members include Northwestern's Sean Wink who led the Big Ten in three-point field goals made, posting 3.19 per game for a total of 86 treys. Ohio State's Jason Singleton started in 28-of-30 games this year for the Buckeyes and played in all but one contest. The 6'6" forward was OSU's second leading scorer posting 10.7 points per game, connecting on 53.7 percent of his shots. William Gladness of Indiana saw action in all of the Hoosiers games this season and started in 26.
Gladness averaged 28 minutes in each contest and contributed 8.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.
Rounding out the team are Iowa's Michael Rebholz, Purdue's Carson Cunningham and Maurice Linton of Wisconsin. Linton played in 21-of-31 games for the Badgers while Cunningham was a member of the Boilermakers team which fell to Stanford, a Final Four finalist, in the Midwest Region.
Big Ten teams have posted a 68-21 record in eight years and have toured
Japan, France, Italy and Finland.
