ROBINSON NOMINATED FOR BUTKUS AWARD
BLOOMINGTON, IND. -- The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc., the organization which annually presents the prestigious Butkus Award to the nation's best collegiate linebacker and Dr. David Joyner, of the Joyner SportsMedicine Institute, Inc., the Award's national sponsor, announced today that Indiana University senior linebacker Jabar Robinson has been nominated for the Butkus Award. Robinson joins 68 other candidates in contention for the award. The independent selection committee for the 1998 Butkus Award is comprised of 27 of the nation's leading media members.
Robinson, a product of Snider High School in Ft. Wayne, Ind., was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection following a 1997 season in which he tallied 101 tackles, including 12 for loss. In 32 career games (31 starts) Robinson has tallied 222 tackles, including 23 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and 4 interceptions.
The list will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists on October 15. The three finalists will be announced via a national teleconference on November 12 and the winner will be announced Friday, December 11, 1998, at Universal Studios Florida.
