INDIANA OPENS SEASON AT COLORADO STATE
THIS WEEK -- The 1998 Indiana volleyball season gets underway this weekend as the squad travels to Fort Collins, Colo., to compete in the University Park/Holiday Inn Classic Sept. 4-6. The Hoosiers open up against Colorado State Friday, Sept. 4, at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 5, the Hoosiers continue action against Arizona at 1 p.m., before wrapping up tournament play Sunday, Sept. 6, against Middle Tennessee State at 1 p.m. (All match times are Eastern Daylight.)
COACH KATIE WEISMILLER -- Katie Weismiller begins her sixth season as Indiana's head coach with a 75-85 (.474) school record and an eight-year career mark of 125-109 (.539). Prior to coming to Indiana, Weismiller spent two years as the assistant coach at Florida where she helped lead the Gators to the school's first Final four appearance in 1992. She began her coaching career at St. Louis University, where she was head coach from 1989-91. There, she guided the Billikens to a 50-24 record, and in 1989, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship.
SEASON STARTS -- The Hoosiers are 5-0 in season opening matches under Katie Weismiller. IU is 16-6 all-time in season openers and 11-6 in road opening matches.
TOUGH ROAD AHEAD -- Eleven of the Hoosiers 19 opponents (and four of their first five) are currently ranked or receiving votes in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 preseason poll. Up first for IU will be Colorado State (No. 26) and Arizona (No. 27), followed by USC (No. 3) and Notre Dame (No. 16) Sept. 11-12.
HOOSIER OUTLOOK -- Experience looks to be the key for the Hoosiers in 1998 as 10 letterwinners and all but one starter return. And of the returnees, seven are upperclassmen. Leading the way for IU is outside hitters Ryann Connors and Jen Magelssen . Last season Connors averaged 3.89 kills and 2.52 digs per game while Magelssen averaged 3.03 kills and 2.89 digs per game and led the team from the service line with 47 aces. Also returning for the Hoosiers is setter Kristina Sanderson and middle blockers Melissa Rooney and Cydryce Carter .
