VOLLEYBALL HOOSIERS LOSE TO NO. 3 USC IN FOUR GAMES
MADISON, Wis. - Indiana's volleyball team dropped a four-game match 11-15, 14-16, 15-11, 2-15 to No. 3 Southern California Friday evening in the first match of the Inntowner Invitational held in the Wisconsin Field House.
With the loss the Hoosiers fall to 2-2 on the season while the nationally ranked Trojans improve to 4-1.
After losing the first game of the match to USC, the Hoosiers found themselves in position to win game two but failed to serve for game point, losing 14-16. Indiana bounced back to record a 15 11 win in game three but was unable to answer the Trojan's blistering attack in game four as USC recorded a .400 attack percentage to the Hoosiers -.129, eventually losing 2-15.
Three IU players tallied double-figure kill match totals with junior Ryann Connors leading the way with 18 kills and 10 digs. Right behind her was sophomore Amanda Welter her registered a career-high 17 kills while also posting a team-best .429 hitting percentage. Senior Melissa Rooney added 11 kills.
Senior Jen Magelssen became IU's career-leader for digs, surpassing former Hoosier Lynn Crawley (1991-94). Magelssen now owns the school record for digs with 1,074, and for service aces with 163.
As a team, the Hoosiers posted 67 kills (.212) to USC's 75 (.278).
"It is frustrating," said Coach Katie Weismiller. "We were in the match and serving for game point in game two. I believe that if we could have taken game two, we would have taken the match. Amanda Welter did a very good job for us tonight. Overall, we did some good things with the No. 3 team in the nation standing across the net from us."
The Hoosiers continue action Saturday, Sept. 12, playing No. 18 Notre Dame in the Inntowner Invitational in Madison, Wis.
