TOP-RANKED HOOSIERS LOSE TO SMU 2-0
Dallas -- All good things must come to an end that was the story line saturday night as the top-ranked Indiana soccer team's 31-game regular season winning streak came to a halt with a 2-0 loss to 11th ranked SMU.
The loss is the first in the regular season since Oct. 13, 1996 when the Hoosiers lost 2-0 at home to Bowling Green. "Streaks do not go on forever," Indiana head coach Jerry Yeagley said. "But now we have to come back from this. Even the best teams in the world lose once in a while."
SMU scored in the 12th minute off a restart. Paul Broome took a corner kick which IU goalkeeper T.J. Hannig punched out but it went directly to the foot of Jeff Brewer who gathered it and put a low shot past Hannig. That was the first goal the Hoosiers had allowed this season in 291 minutes of play.
Indiana had a chance to tie the game just six minutes later as Lazo Alavanja drilled a long shot which appeared to be going into the top left hand portion of the net. SMU goalkeeper Byron Foss just got his fingers on it and deflected it into the crossbar and the ball went over the goalline.
"That was a really big save for us," SMU coach Schellas Hyndman said. "It could have been 1-1 and who knows what would have happened from there."
SMU's second goal was scored by Broome on a long direct free kick which beat Hannig to the upper right hand part of the goal. Then the SMU defense took over.
After the field was soaked by an all-day rain, it made it almost impossible for the Hoosiers to use their speed to try and make up the deficit. Late in the game, Alavanja had two chances to score but one shot went over the cross bar and Foss saved the other.
The game was also marred by rough play which results in five yellow cards being handed out and a total of 37 fouls being called.
"We missed our chances tonight," Yeagley said. "SMU was fired up and we have to give them credit. They had to play in the same condidtions as we did."
