VOLLEYBALL HOOSIERS UPSET NO. 18 NOTRE DAME
MADISON, Wis. - Indiana's volleyball team rebounded from Friday's loss to No. 3 Southern California to upset No. 18 Notre Dame 15-12, 15-6, 5-15, 5-15, 15-11 this evening at the Inntowner Invitational held at the Wisconsin Field House.
With the win, the Hoosiers improve to 3-2 on the season while Notre Dame falls to 2-3 overall.
Led by a season-high 23 kills from outside hitter Ryann Connors, the Hoosiers took the first two games off of the Fighting Irish before dropping the third and fourth games as the squad struggled from the service line. Winning the rally scored fifth game 15-11, the Hoosiers posted their first win of the season against a nationally ranked team.
Ball control seemed to be the key in getting IU's offensive attack rolling as four Hoosiers tallied double-digit dig figures. Just one night after becoming the school's all-time career dig leader, senior Jen Magelessen registered a match and season-high 17 digs.
As a team, Indiana came up with 64 kills compared to Notre Dame's 47.
Having had played three nationally ranked opponents out of their first five matches this season, the Hoosiers were excited over the upset.
"This was a very emotional match for our team," said Coach Katie Weismiller. "We came out and played hard the whole way through. Ryann Connors had an excellent night for us with 23 kills and Jen Magelssen really was key for us this weekend. With her ball control and passing, she just got our offense going."
The Hoosiers will be back in action Tuesday, Sept. 15, when they host their season home opener against Butler at 7 p.m., at University Gym.
