HOOSIERS HOST BUTLER IN SEASON HOME OPENER SEPT. 15
THIS WEEK -- The Hoosiers make their 1998 season home opening debut Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., in University Gym (Tenth Street and Highway 46 Bypass). Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children. Indiana University students are admitted free of charge with a valid ID.
ABOUT THE HOOSIERS -- The Hoosiers enter Tuesday match with a 3-2 overall record. This past weekend Indiana split play at the Inntowner Invitational held in Madison, Wis. IU opened tournament play losing to No. 3 Southern California 11-15, 14-16, 15-11, 2-15. Three Hoosiers tallied double-figure kill match totals with junior Ryann Connors leading the way with 18 kills and 10 digs. Teammate Amanda Welter registered a career-high 17 kills while Melissa Rooney added 11 kills. The Hoosiers rebounded Saturday to upset No. 18 Notre Dame 15-12, 15-6, 5-15, 5-15, 15-11. Connors, who was named to the all-tournament team, again led her squad with a season-high 23 kills while senior Jen Magelssen recorded a season-high 17 digs.
COACH KATIE WEISMILLER -- Katie Weismiller begins her sixth season as Indiana's head coach with a 78-87 (.474) school record and an eight-year career mark of 128-111 (.539). Prior to coming to Indiana, Weismiller spent two years as the assistant coach at Florida where she helped lead the Gators to the school's first Final four appearance in 1992. She began her coaching career at St. Louis University, where she was head coach from 1989-91. There, she guided the Billikens to a 50-24 record, and in 1989, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship.
PLAYING WITH THE BEST -- Eleven of the Hoosiers 19 opponents (and four of their first five) are currently ranked or receiving votes in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll. IU defeated Notre Dame (No. 18) and Colorado State (receiving votes) but lost to Arizona (No. 25) and USC (No. 3).
ON BUTLER -- The 1-5 Bulldogs have gotten off to a tough start with just one win to Eastern Michigan and losses to Wisconsin, Ball State, Arkansas, Kansas and Kentucky. Four starters and eight letterwinners have returned this season for seventh-year head coach Sharon Dingman. Senior Amy Pickett leads her team, averaging 3.67 kills per game. As a team, the Bulldogs are averaging 11.67 kills, 13.76 digs and 1.62 blocks per game. The Series: The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 5-2.
CONNORS' ATTACK -- Junior Ryann Connors has opened the season a perfect two-for-two for all-tournament team honors. The outside hitter earned a spot on the University Park Holiday Inn Classic all-tourney team last weekend, posting a .358 attack percentage with 38 kills, 20 digs and seven blocks. At the Inntowner Invitational held this past weekend, she registered 18 kills and 10 digs against No. 3 USC and a match-high 23 kills and 11 digs against No. 18 Notre Dame. For the season she is leading the Hoosier attack with a .310 hitting percentage while averaging 3.95 kills and 2.05 digs per game
TOP OF THE LEADERBOARD -- Senior Jen Magelssen etched her name for the second time in Indiana's record books by becoming the school's all-time dig leader this past weekend. The 5-8 outside hitter already owns the school record for service aces with 163 and now holds the program's dig record with 1,088, passing former IU standout Lynn Crawley (1,060/1991 94). Currently ranked fifth all-time for career kills, Magelssen is just 268 kills shy of taking over the school record in that catagory.
HOOSIERS SERVE IT UP -- Known for their performance at the service line, the Hoosiers have already served out 29 aces this season. Defensive specialist Erin Heimann has delivered seven aces.
SWINGING ON THE RIGHT -- Sophomore Amanda Welter has settled in nicely as IU's new right side hitter. Replacing the graduated Julie Flatley, Welter pounded home a career-high 17 kills against No. 3 USC and is currently second in kills for the team, averaging 2.21 per game.
INJURY REPORT -- Sophomore outside hitter Jill Mudge underwent arthoscopic surgery on her left knee Aug. 28, and will be sidelined for two more weeks. Also, freshman outside hitter Katie Klink will miss match action after undergoing arthoscopic surgery on her right ankle Sept. 14.
