HOOSIERS PLAY THREE GAMES THIS WEEK
Game Data: The Indiana Hoosiers play three games this week as they host Miami (O.) at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday (Sept. 16) at 7:30 p.m. IU will then play in the Butler Classic at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis over the weekend. The Hoosiers play Central Florida at 6 p.m. Friday (Sept. 18) and Jacksonville Sunday (Sept. 20) at 12 p.m.
Indiana Head Coach Jerry Yeagley is in his 26th year at Indiana and is the winningest coach in collegiate soccer history. He has a career record of 437-79-37. He has led the Hoosiers to national titles in 1982, 1983 and 1988, 11 Final Four appearances and six Big Ten titles.
Hoosiers In the Polls: After last week's loss at SMU the Hoosiers dropped out of the No. 1 spot in the nation. This week Indiana is ranked No. 3 (Soccer America), tied for No. 6 (NSCAA) and No. 7 (Soccer News). Indiana remains the top team in the Great Lakes Region.
Series Matchups: Indiana and Miami are meeting for the 10th time. The Hoosiers lead the series 9-0-0 and won last year's game 4-0 in Oxford. In the previous nine games, Indiana has outscored the Redhawks 48-1. The games against Central Florida and Jacksonville are the first meetings between those teams and Indiana.
A Look at the Opponents: Miami is 1-4 on the season. Nick Patterson is the team's leading scorer with 3 goals and 6 points. Central Florida is a team which features a great deal of international players and is 4-0-0 heading into the week. Heikki Ritvanen is the team's leading scorer at 9-1-19 while goalkeeper Antti Laitinen has a 0.75 GAA. Jacksonville is 6-0-0 after last week's play.
Last Week Recap: The Hoosiers split a pair of games last weekend in Dallas at the SMU Classic. Indiana started the tournament with a 6-0 victory over Florida International but then lost to 11th-ranked SMU 2-0. The Hoosiers outshot both opponents but SMU scored both of their goals on re-starts.
Winning Streak Comes to an End: Indiana's loss to SMU broke a 31-game regular season winning streak for the Hoosiers. The team's last loss in the regular season prior to last Saturday was back on Oct 13, 1996 when IU lost to Bowling Green 2-0. Still over the last 39 games, the Hoosiers are 35-3-1.
Have to Shut Them Out: If a team is going to beat Indiana they have to shut them out. In Indiana's last seven losses (which dates back to Oct. 13, 1995), the Hoosiers have been shutout each time. The last time Indiana scored at least one goal and lost was Oct. 8, 1995 at Bowling Green (2-1).
Quoting the Coach: "Streaks do not go on forever but now we have to come back from this. Even the best teams in the world lose once in a while. We missed our chances against SMU. They were fired up and we have to give them credit. They had to play in the same conditions as we did. We didn't want this streak to end in a game where we played poorly and that didn't happen tonight. They got two re-start goals and we just didn't capitalize on our chances. I think this will make us a better team in the long run."
Hoosier News and Notes: Dema Kovalenko scored his 32nd career goal against FIU. That places him in a tie for 11th on the all-time IU list. He needs just two more to take over 10th place. His 71 career points are now tied for 16th on the all-time scoring list. Aleksey Korol scored two goals and had two assists against FIU for a single game career-high 6 points. He and Kovalenko share the team lead in points with 6 each. Korol's second goal was the 20th of his career which makes him the 24th player in school history to have reached that plateau. Lazo Alavanja also scored twice against FIU including a tally on Indiana's first penalty kick attempt of the season. He enters the week leading the Hoosiers in shots with 10 and tied with Kovalenko, Korol and Ryan Mack for the team lead in goals with 2 Goalkeeper T.J. Hannig allowed his first goals of the season over the weekend. He posted his third consecutive shutout of the season (and 13th of his career) as he blanked FIU. His GAA stands at 0.50 heading into the week. Before SMU scored, the Hoosiers had not allowed a goal in the first 291 minutes of the season. Korol, Alavanja and Nick Garcia were all named to the all-tournament team. The Hoosiers have scored five first half goals this season while allowing just one in the first 45 minutes. Among Big Ten leaders, Korol and Kovalenko are in a tie for fourth in scoring while Hannig is second in goals against averageIndiana is the second-highest scoring team in the league with 9 goals (Penn State leads with 12).
Next Up: The Hoosiers host Louisville next Friday (Sept. 25) at Bill Armstrong Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Indiana then opens the Big Ten Conference season at Michigan State. That game is scheduled for Sunday (Sept. 27) at 2:30 p.m. EDT.
