HOOSIERS BEAT MIAMI 4-0Bloomington, Ind. -- The Indiana Hoosiers (4-1-0) defeated the University of Miami (Ohio) Redhawks (1-5-0) 4-0 tonight at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers dominated all aspects of the game, rattling off a season-high 23 shots while holding the Redhawks to just four. IU's first goal came at the 27:59 mark, a shot by Dema Kovalenko with the assist going to Matt Fundenberger. The next goal for the Hoosiers came at the 39:14 mark, a blast by Aleksey Korol, assisted by Lazo Alavanja.
The second half was much of the same. The IU defense holding the Redhawks in check while the Hoosier attack continued. At the 64:10 mark, freshman-standout Ryan Mack stole the ball near the goal and then booted in past Miami's keeper Kevin Preneveau. IU's final goal came at 81:31, a header off a throw in by Tyler Hawley, with the assist going to Austin Ripmaster.
After suffering their first loss of the season last weekend to SMU, the Hoosiers feel they have successfully rebounded. "It was a good game for us," Kovalenko said. "It's a good start for the tough games this weekend."
Not only do the players think this game was an improvement, but Coach Jerry Yeagley was very happy with the way his team played. "I thought Ripmaster and Hawley really did a nice job with their minutes," Yeagley said. "I was generally pleased with all the reserves."
The Hoosiers next travel to Indianapolis to participate in the Nike/Snickers Soccer Fest III. On Friday, September 18, the IU will face the University of Central Florida and on Sunday the Hoosiers will square off against the University of Jacksonville.
