HOOSIERS PLAY AT BUTLER CLASSIC
Game Data: The Indiana Hoosiers finish their three-game week traveling to Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis to play in the Butler Classic. The Hoosiers battle Central Florida at 6 p.m. Friday (Sept. 18) and Jacksonville Sunday (Sept. 20) at 12 p.m.
Indiana Head Coach Jerry Yeagley ...is in his 26th year at Indiana and is the winningest coach in collegiate soccer history. He has a career record of 438-79-37. He has led the Hoosiers to national titles in 1982, 1983 and 1988, 11 Final Four appearances and six Big Ten titles.
Hoosiers In the Polls: After last week's loss at SMU the Hoosiers dropped out of the No. 1 spot in the nation. This week Indiana is ranked No. 3 (Soccer America), tied for No. 6 (NSCAA) and No. 7 (Soccer News). Indiana remains the top team in the Great Lakes Region.
Series Matchups: The games against Central Florida and Jacksonville are Indiana's first ever meetings against these teams.
A Look at the Opponents: Central Florida is a team which features a great deal of international players and is 4-0-0 heading into the week. The Golden Knights lead the NCAA in scoring offense with an 5.25 average. Heikki Ritvanen is the team's leading scorer at 9-1-19 and ranks first in the NCAA averaging 4.75 points and 2.25 goals per game. Goalkeeper Antti Laitinen has a 0.75 GAA. Jacksonville is 6-0-0 after last week's play. The Dolphins are 12th averaging 3.17 goals. Sophomore Nesa Stefanovic ranks second in the NCAA in points per game and fourth in goals per game.
Last Week Recap: IU defeated Miami (O.) on Wednesday 4-0 at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers shot a season high 23 times compared to Miami's 4 attempts. Last week, the Hoosiers split a pair of games last weekend in Dallas at the SMU Classic. Indiana started the tournament with a 6-0 victory over Florida International but then lost to 11th-ranked SMU 2-0. The Hoosiers outshot both opponents but SMU scored both of their goals on re-starts.
Winning Streak Comes to an End: Indiana's loss to SMU broke a 31-game regular season winning streak for the Hoosiers. The team's last loss in the regular season prior to last Saturday was back on Oct 13, 1996 when IU lost to Bowling Green 2-0. Still over the last 40 games, the Hoosiers are 36-3-1.
Have to Shut Them Out: If a team is going to beat Indiana they have to shut them out. In Indiana's last seven losses (which dates back to Oct. 13, 1995), the Hoosiers have been shutout each time. The last time Indiana scored at least one goal and lost was Oct. 8, 1995 at Bowling Green (2-1).
Hoosier News and Notes: Dema Kovalenko scored his 33rd career goal against Miami. That places him in a tie for 10th on the all-time IU list. He needs six more to take over 9th place. His 73 career points are now 16th on the all-time scoring list Aleksey Korol and Kovalenko share the team lead in points with 8 each and goals with 3. Freshman Tyler Hawley scored his first career goal against the Redhawks... Korol scored two goals and had two assists against FIU for a single game career-high 6 points. Against FIU, Korol scored his 20th of his career which makes him the 24th player in school history to have reached that plateau...Goalkeeper T.J. Hannig allowed his first goals of the season over the weekend. He posted his 14th career shut out versus Miami as he blanked the Redhawks. His GAA stands at 0.52 heading into the weekend...Before SMU scored, the Hoosiers had not allowed a goal in the first 291 minutes of the season...Korol, Alavanja and Nick Garcia were all named to the all-tournament team. The Hoosiers have scored seven first half goals this season while allowing just one in the first 45 minutesIn the NCAA ranks, IU holds 18th in team defense with a 0.48 GAA...Among Big Ten leaders, Korol and Kovalenko are in a tie for fourth in scoring while Hannig is second in goals against average...Indiana is the second-highest scoring team in the league with 9 goals (Penn State leads with 12).
Next Up: The Hoosiers host Louisville next Friday (Sept. 25) at Bill
Armstrong Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Indiana then opens the Big Ten Conference
season at Michigan State. That game is scheduled for Sunday (Sept. 27)
at 2:30 p.m. EDT.
