THIS WEEK -- The Hoosiers host the Ameritech Cellular and Paging Classic this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18-19. Indiana begins the tournament Friday against Eastern Washington at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Hoosiers take on Oakland at 10 a.m., and then Alabama at 7:30 p.m. All tournament matches will be played at University Gym (Tenth Street and Highway 46 Bypass). Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children. Indiana University students are admitted free of charge with a valid ID.
ABOUT THE HOOSIERS -- The Hoosiers improved their record to 4-2 on the season after defeating Butler 15-1, 15-10, 12-15, 15-3 Tuesday evening at University Gym. Junior Ryann Connors led IU with 16 kills and nine digs while senior Jen Magelssen posted 13 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore Amanda Welter registered a .429 attack percentage with just two errors on 11 kills and 21 attempts. As a team, Indiana recorded a .241 attack percentage compared to Butler's .073 hitting efficiency.
HOOSIERS RECEIVE VOTES -- Indiana received 24 votes in the latest USA TODAY/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll released Sept. 14. For the Hoosiers, it is the first time this season they have received votes. Indiana has made the top 25 just once previously, on Sept. 30, 1997, when they were voted in at No. 25.
COACH KATIE WEISMILLER -- Katie Weismiller begins her sixth season as Indiana's head coach with a 79-87 (.474) school record and an eight-year career mark of 129-111 (.539). Prior to coming to Indiana, Weismiller spent two years as the assistant coach at Florida where she helped lead the Gators to the school's first Final four appearance in 1992. She began her coaching career at St. Louis University, where she was head coach from 1989-91. There, she guided the Billikens to a 50-24 record, and in 1989, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship.
PLAYING WITH THE BEST -- Twelve of the Hoosiers 19 opponents are currently ranked or receiving votes in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll. The Hoosiers have already faced No. 5 USC, No. 21 Arizona and No. 24 Notre Dame and will meet Eastern Washington (receiving votes) this Friday.
BIG TEN TOUGHNESS -- Led by 1997 NCAA Division I runner-up Penn State, the Big Ten Conference has six teams voted in the latest USA TODAY/AVCA Top 25 poll, more than any other conference. The Lady Lions are joined in the poll by No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 14 Ohio State, No. 18 Michigan State, No. 22 Illinois and No. 25 Minnesota. Indiana, Michigan and Northwestern are receiving votes for Top 25 recognition.
ON ALABAMA -- Alabama enters this weekend's tournament with a 7-2 overall record. The Crimson Tide's two loses were to Fairfield and Miami (Ohio). Outside hitters Michelle Green and Monica Morales lead the Alabama attack, averaging 3.43 and 3.40 kills per game, respectively. The squad is coached by third-year head coach Judy Green. The Series: The Crimson Tide hold a 2-0 all-time series lead.
ON EASTERN WASHINGTON -- Prior to EWU's Thursday afternoon match vs. Cal State Northridge, the Eagles were 6-0 overall. Last weekend, EWU captured its second-straight tournament title after downing then-No. 23 Washington 3-1. Leading the way for the Eagles is 6-1 middle blocker Kim Exner. After earning Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honors the last two weeks, the senior was named the conference's first ever AVCA Player of the Week Sept. 14. Exner is averaging 5.15 kills per game. EWU is coached by Pamela Parks who is in her 17th season with the program and carries a 243-242 school record. The Series: Friday's meeting will be the first for the two programs.
ON OAKLAND -- The 1-5 Golden Grizzlies have gotten off to a tough start with their lone win coming against Virginia Commonwealth in their season opener. Freshman Shyann Robinson leads Oakland, averaging 4.15 kills and 3.05 digs per game. Dan Schulte is in his fourth season at Oakland with a 75-32 school record. The Series: Saturday's meeting will be the first for the two programs.
CONNORS' ATTACK -- Junior Ryann Connors is a perfect two-for-two for all-tournament accolades this season. The outside hitter earned a spot on the University Park Holiday Inn Classic all-tourney team last weekend, posting a .358 attack percentage with 38 kills, 20 digs and seven blocks. At the Inntowner Invitational last weekend, she registered 18 kills and 10 digs. against No. 3 USC and a match-high 23 kills and 11 digs against No. 18 Notre Dame. For the season she is leading the Hoosier attack with a .305 hitting percentage while averaging 3.96 kills and 2.08 digs per game
TOP OF THE LEADERBOARD -- Senior Jen Magelssen etched her name once again in Indiana's record books by becoming the school's all-time dig leader last weekend. The 5-8 outside hitter already owns the school record for service aces with 165 and now holds the program's dig record with 1,101 digs, passing former IU player Lynn Crawley (1,060/1991-94). Currently ranked sixth all-time for career kills, Magelssen is just 255 kills shy of taking over the school record in that category.
HOOSIERS SERVE IT UP -- Known for their performance at the service line, the Hoosiers have already served out 36 aces this season. Defensive specialist Erin Heimann has delivered eight aces.
SWINGING ON THE RIGHT -- Sophomore Amanda Welter has settled in nicely as IU's new right side hitter. Replacing the graduated Julie Flatley, Welter pounded home a career-high 17 kills against No. 3 USC and is currently second in kills for the team, averaging 2.30 per game.
INJURY REPORT -- Sophomore outside hitter Jill Mudge underwent arthoscopic surgery on her left knee Aug. 28, and will be sidelined for two more weeks. Also, freshman outside hitter Katie Klink will miss match action after undergoing arthoscopic surgery on her right ankle Sept. 16.
LOOKING FOR RECORDS -- Both setter Kristina Sanderson and middle blocker Cydryce Carter will be looking to reset their individual school single season records set last year as sophomores. Sanderson put her name in the record books for assists in a single season (1,577) while Carter inked her spot for most block assists in a single season (139).
THROUGH THE TURNSTILE -- Since moving its home matches from Assembly Hall to University Gym in 1996, Hoosier volleyball has become a marquee event in Bloomington. Last season, Indiana set a new school record for attendance with 10,233 fans passing through the gate. In Big Ten competition, the Hoosiers averaged 827 fans per game.
HOOSIERS IN THE BIG TEN -- In the Big Ten Conference's preseason poll announced July 20, the Big Ten Volleyball coaches unanimously selected Penn State first in the 1998 pre-season coaches poll. Closely following PSU was last year's co-champion Wisconsin. Indiana was chosen to finish eighth.
