September 18, 1998 Hoosier defeat Eastern Washington 3-1
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's volleyball team rebounded from an slow, anxious start to defeat Eastern Washington 10-15, 15-6, 15-6, 15-8 Friday evening in the first day of competition at the Ameritech Cellular and Paging Classic held at University Gym.
Handing EWU its first loss of the season, the Hoosiers improved to 5-2 on the year while the Eagles dropped to 6-1. Earlier in the evening, Alabama defeated Oakland 15-12, 15-9, 15-0 in the first match of the Classic.
Junior Ryann Connors led Indiana's offensive assult with a career-high 25 kills. The outside hitter also posted an impressive .315 attack percentage and came up with a team-high 17 digs. Other Hoosier hitters recording double-digit kill figures were Amanda Welter with 17 and Jen Magelssen and Laura Mettes with 11 kills apiece. As a team, the Hoosiers tallied 72 kills to EWU's 55 and hit .249 compared to the Eagles' .129 attack percentage. IU also registered 22 block assists and one block solo.
"This was a tough match for us tonight because Eastern Washington is so good," said a happy Katie Weismiller. "This is the best match we have played this season."
Junior Cydryce Carter, who had six kills, 14 digs and six blocks said of the match, "This was a huge team effort. It was awesome. We never ever let down. Even when we messed up, we just came back and kept swinging tonight."
The Hoosiers will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 19, playing Oakland at 10 a.m. and Alabama, in the tournament final, at 7:30 p.m.
