VOLLEYBALL HOOSIERS TAKE CLASSIC TITLE
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - If any indication of Indiana's volleyball team performance this weekend is a telling sign of what the Hoosiers will face when they open Big Ten Conference play next weekend, then the Hoosier squad looks more than up for the challenge as IU swept the Ameritech Cellular and Paging Classic Tournament title Saturday evening with three-game wins over Oakland and Alabama at University Gym.
The Hoosiers capped off a 3-0 weekend with a 3-1 defeat of Eastern Washington Friday night before posting a 15-9, 15-5, 15-3 win over Oakland and a 15-4, 15-7, 15-1 victory over Alabama Saturday.
Leading the way for the Hoosiers was tournament MVP Ryann Connors who recorded 20 kills against the Crimson Tide while registering 51 kills for the weekend. Teammates Jen Magelssen and Kristina Sanderson were also named to the all tournament squad for their play at outside hitter and setter, respectively.
Against Alabama, the Hoosiers posted more than double their opponents kill totals, knocking down 67 kills compared to the Crimson Tide's 33. In addition, Indiana registered an impressive .538 attack percentage with just 11 errors on 104 attempts.
Following Connors 20 kills was Magelssen with 17 kills and Cydryce Carter with 13.
"From a coaching stance, I am very pleased with our overall performance this weekend," said Coach Katie Weismiller. "To end the tournament with a 15-1 game three win over Alabama, who is a Southeastern Conference team, is very satisfying. Also knowing that we are heading into Big Ten play next weekend and we are playing really well right now. We put forth a great team effort this weekend."
Tournament MVP Ryann Connors said, "Being named MVP is a great honor but I couldn't have done it without my teammates. It's a six player game and they have to set, pass and block for it to all work."
The Hoosiers next face No. 7 Wisconsin Friday, Sept. 25, at University Gym.
