HOOSIERS BEAT JACKSONVILLE 4-1
Indianapolis -- It was just a matter of time before Indiana
All-American Lazo Alavanja had a big game. That came Sunday as
he scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Hoosiers to
a 4-1 victory over Jacksonville.
"It was his best game of the year," Indiana head coach
Jerry Yeagley said. "I knew it would come. He has played
well in spots this season but he was he man today."
Alavanja score the Hoosiers second goal in the 11th minute as he stole a pass from a Jacksonville defender, dribbled through three players and blasted a shot from 22 yards out which beat JU goalkeeper Petar Popovich.
He also scored the final goal of the game as he gathered in a lose ball and balsted another shot into the net from 30 yards out.
"I had some opportunities today and took advantage of them," Alavanja said. "They (the Jacksonville defense) was sitting back all day and gave me the chance to make some plays."
Gino DiGuardi scored the Hoosiers first goal of the game in the fifth minute as he converted a shot from 12 yards out after the ball ended up at his feet following an Indiana re-start.
After scoring those two quick goals in the first half, the Indiana offense slowed down, which was really the only weak spot of the game for the No. 3 Hoosiers.
"We came out strong but took the foot off the pedal after we scored twice early," Yeagley said.
The Hoosiers had to pick it up shortly after halftime as JU's Nesa Stefanovic scored in the first two minutes of the second half on a rebound deflection to cut the lead to 2-1.
But just two minutes later, Alavanja served Yuri Lavrinenko
with a perfect pass at the top of the penalty area and he drilled
it home to make the lead 3-1.
"It was nice to see us come out and get two quick goals
in the second half after they scored," Yeagley said.
As in Friday's game against Central Florida, the Hoosiers could
have scored more but shots by Tyler Hawley and Tommy Keenan hit
the goalpost. "We had quality opportunities today but didn't
score as many goals as we should have," Yeagley added.
Indiana controlled the pace of play for most of the game as
they pounded out 21 shots while holding the Dolphins to 10. The
Hoosiers also had seven corner kicks.
